arranged some electrons, so they looked like this :

... it up.

Don't. Give the chauffeur a bad address, get lost and then come back to tell us how you
enjoyed your arrival.

He SAID they don't speak French, Magda. :-) (Anyway, that
sort of mistake is common, even among those of us who have a
nodding acquaintance with the language - singular/plural and
use of incorrect gender....)

Taxis work even better - especially when you're tired after
a long international flight, and don't speak French! They
give you door to door service, and you can avoid any
misunderstandings by showing the driver your written out
hotel address. (Sure, they're more expensive, but it beats
getting lost in a strange city, then trying to explain where
you REALLY wanted to go to someone who speaks only his
native tongue.)

If that's where you're planning to go, don't you think it
might be a good idea to get the name right? (If it DOESN'T
"matter" to you, perhaps you should stay home?)

Time to learn, or what ?

Once I told a (foreigner, of course) friend that I lived near the Mairie. Hôtel de Ville.
I gave her my address but she zapped the station name and was 30 min late when she called,
half panicking, asking where the hell was the street where I lived - she was in Mairie de
Saint Ouen.

You can't be too careful with these folks.

Where did you come up with that impression? I just used a credit card
at CDG recently, although with some trepidation since the Italian
before me had his bank of rome card rejected a number of times. I
would always expect a particular card may be rejected and carry
alternate ones. But there was a different kind of machine there also,
which might have required those euro credit cards with a chip inside -
why don't they label those machines better, since there are 2 train
systems there? CDG seems poorly organized and probably needs a
management change.

At the Orly airport, I must confess the machine did reject my credit
cards and appeared to only take coins (and a paper change machine
didn't work). While I was digging every last coin out of my luggage, I
noticed a strange detached paper money slot off to the side, and darned
if it didn't work fine and immediately tell my machine to spit out a
ticket.

My RER-b advice may have sounded complicated, but you can just follow
the signs and will get there, maybe in a slightly less efficient way.
Best to use rail, and not contribute to the congestion and pollution
you may be trying to excape anyway...

It's not an impression it is an experience from March 2004. The
machines at the top of the escalators leading to the RER platform would
not take credit cards. Not only mine but none of the ones from anyone
in the line. This included european credit cards. I tried two
different cards before I gave up and fed it the coins. Fortunately I
had a bunch of euro coins left from a previous trip.

If there was a strange paper money slot none of the other folks in line
were able to find it.

There were folks running all over making small purchases trying to
cobble together enough coins to get a ticket downtown.

Since then I have been told that the folks at the Thalys ticket windows
will sell RER tickets but there was no indication I could see.
