Re: anybody been to Basel?
I was there for a week a couple of years ago. It is an expensive city
but you can eat in the pubs there for pretty cheap. I also bought
sandwichs or noshed on chestnuts for lunch (it was november and the
chestnut roasters were everywhere).
It is a beautiful city. The rhine river runs through the old town.
Lovely cathedral up on the hill above the old town. Good museums. A
nice markt plaz with farmers market everyday. Lots of easy cheap
public transportation.
Have fun.

Re: anybody been to Basel?
Thanks everybody for your comments on Basel. One more thing I would like to
ask is about the communication there. I speak English and a little rusty
French but no German. Will I have a problem in Basel with regards to
communication?

No, shouldn't be a problem, but IIRC they speak more German than French, but
slow English should be fine in 95% of situations, as in most of the world.

Must have been something very special.
A search for tomorrow
http://www.hrs.de/se/bahn?L=uk&KDNR=...Y=2004&lang=uk
provided 22 hotels from 64 Euro up to 120 Euro for a single.
Hilton at 234 E was the only one above.
Think there are some smaller establishments and pensiones at lower prices
than so.

That's interesting. I found stats for 2002 from the same website:
GVA: 177000
Basel: 165000
Also I found stats for GVA at 185000 and Basel 186000. Well, this could
be the confusion but these numbers didn't come from the same site....
Is there nowhere we can get reliable stats??
Ultimately it doesn't really matter to me personally but my friends in
GVA are convinced they live in the second city! ;o) Maybe they'll have to
recruit another 2000 people!

Found about the same stats now: Geneva 175,998 - Basel 164,850.
So it seems Geneva is indeed somewhat bigger.

I may be able to explain that number for Basel, but not for Geneva:
the document mentioned above states 186,871 inhabitants for the
canton Basel-Stadt ("Basel City"), which contains not only the city
of Basel but also the towns of Riehen and Bettingen.
(The canton Genf (Geneva) has 414,259 inhabitants.)
> Is there nowhere we can get reliable stats??
I think the Swiss Federal Statistics Office is about as reliable as we
can get.

But that covers a considerably (8x) larger territory than Basel-Stadt,
with several other towns. A comparison at canton level should include
Basel-Land with 265,500 inhabitants (twice the area of Geneve the Canton).
And then we aren't comparing cities anymore.
