anybody been to Basel?
I will be going to Basel Switzerland in September for an event. I'm
wondering if anybody has ever been there and can offer any comments about
your trip. I heard that the city is very expensive and would like to hear
about some inexpensive places to eat.

We have driven through it many times, from the border to Zurich but never
stayed, stopped or looked around.

It's in Switzerland, being expensive is a given.

Sorry can't actually recommend anywhere, it's ages since

Re: anybody been to Basel?
Clint, I was in Basel 5 weeks ago. By using the Tourist Office
in-town, I tried to get a single room for one night, in town. Price =
220 Euros. A single room "out in the countryside" was 150 Euros. Nice
city, but apparantly a little short of numbers of beds.

That's just a rumor.
You'll spend the same amount in most restaurants in Germany, France,
Italy ... in the cities. Since introduction of the Euro things changed a
lot.
>>and would like to hear
>>about some inexpensive places to eat.
Close to the railway station is a great and rather inexpensive Asian
place. Just coming out of the station turn left and walk 500 meters.
A good Turkish place is found near Aeschenplatz.
In the historical center are many places. Usually the menus are
displayed outside, so it's easy to compare the locations.

No you won't. Count on 20-30% more than Germany and France for a meal
including meat. Things have changed a lot since the Euro ie prices
simply relabelled with the same number in Euros as were DM. That said
Schweiz limitations, high wages and duty on meat imports means that
restaurant prices remain high.
That said the pizzeria kind of places tend to be reasonably priced. It
depends what level you are pitching at.
If you're there for an "event", if its a business event then get your
hotel room booked well in advance. Hotels are of good quality but
expensive.
The town around the station and the approach from either France or
Germany is hideous (don't-want-to-stop-hideous), so you need to get
into the old town to see how pretty it is.

Its been so many years since I was there I cant remember where I ate, but
I'm sure there was a MacDonalds :-). And you could always buy bread and
cheese from the supermarket.
Also the Germany border is only a taxi ride away. With (apparently) some
good adult entertainment places if that is your scene.
But the center of Basel is beautiful.

Shame on you.
You missed out on a very nice city, esp. the old town.
By the next opportunity get rid of that 'Bildungslücke' :-)

You must have bad timing. I just did a hrs.de search for a random day
next week, and found single rooms, in the city, from 65 euro. 115 euro
gives you a 5-star.

I have personally not experienced this once.
Normal prices for a meal in a Brauerei/Gasthof is around 10 Euro
replacing the 20DMs of before. One place that we frequent
does a lunch each day for 4.95, that's less than I'm expected to
pay in the works canteen (unfortunately it's too far to go to at
lunch-time).

Used to moor there frequently (at St Johann by one of the old
city-gate towers) when I worked on Rhine/Moselle river cruises.
Very pleasant area around the Münster - you can see where part of the
Minster was destroyed in the 1356 earthquake.
The market place by the town hall has a great open-air market most
mornings - local produce on sale, plus olives, cheese and all sorts of
other goodies.
On the opposite side of the river to the Münster is the Rheingasse,
where the oldest houses are. Pleasant walk along the Rhine bank to see
the backs of these houses. It's great to cross the river in one of the
little ferries which have no sails or motors - they simply use the
power of the currents.
The Tourist Office runs some informative coach tours from the SBB
railway station - good orientation of the city.
I didn't much care for Basel at first, but I grew to like it very
much. Part of this was peoples' general friendliness. Sit down for a
coffee and people at the next table might well have a good old natter
with you.
The green trams (called the Drämmli - little tram - by the locals)
will get you around the place. Have fun!

That is surprising. I thought Geneva was bigger than Basel.
Has this changed recently or have I had it wrong all along?
