Amsterdam to Brussels / Luxemburg
Hi,
We will be going to Amsterdam within the next couple of months and would
like to visit Brussels as well as Luxemburg while we are there.
How reliable is the train service that connects Amsterdam with the capitals
of Belgium and Luxemburg?
Would renting an automobile be a better option regarding price and
flexibility?
Thank you.

The Brussels - Amsterdam and Brussels - Luxemburg train services run at
least hourly throughout the day. They are quite reliable even though the
Amsterdam - Brussels service sometimes experiences delays in the 10 to
15 minutes order of magnitude...

A car will be a nuisance in Brussels and Amsterdam, and will not get you
faster between these cities unless you manage to completely avoid any
rush hour... (drive in the middle of the night...). From Brussels to
Luxemburg a car might be a good idea if you plan on taking in some
sights on the way.
Greetings,
Krist

Highly reliable, though it depends on your frame of reference. For instance,
if you're from Japan, you might find the occasional 5-minute delays
exasperating. If you're from the USA, you'll find the hourly service to
Brussels and absence of frequent 4-hour delays refreshing.

Sounds like a major hassle.

Jason,
The train from Amsterdam to Brussels is the beautiful way to go.
Renting car just to travel between these cities is not a good idea.
If you are traveling in other than July and August and not on weekends
ask for the Super Dagretour. You travel after 09:00 and return anytime
the same day and save a lot. I did Haarlem to Brussels in January for
e34. You can also get off in Antwerp or the Hague for a walkabout.
See my page http://www.enjoy-europe.com/hte/chap17/rail.htm for more
info on using the trains in Europe.

Major roadworks on the motorway Brussels-Luxemburg between Tellin and
Habay starting in September. Road will be closed completely at times.
