If a recent BBC radio programme is anything to go by, there are quite a
lot of non-recent immigrants in Amsterdam who don't speak Dutch, never
mind English.

I guess it should be pretty easy to challenge this statement.

Do you mean from Amsterdam to elsewhere? Most Dutch people speak
excellent English.

Possibly, but not if your approach is to go on at great length about how it
is done differently by Finnish banks.

You are right about that. And naturally one doesn't have to be worried about
finding English speaking tour guides in Amsterdam.

On my last trip to Amsterdam though, it took me a good while to find an
ATM though, the first one I found was out of order- this was near
Museumplein.

This is of course not true. My guesstimate is that 80% of Amsterdamers speak
reasonable to good English, but there is a sizeable minority (which includes
the groups you refer to in your post) that doesn't speak (much) English.

It's primarily those pesky Muslims that refuse to assimilate into Dutch
society, Sjoerd...

If you can find one that doesn't speak English, they are lying.

Ellen, my wife and I love Amsterdam and have become friends with
Frederik from Let's Go Tours in Amsterdam. The website is
www.letsgo-amsterdam.com. He is well traveled, highly educated and
just plain friendly. You can not go wrong with him. If you arrange a
tour with him, tell him that Tom and Dee from Texas told you about him.
