How about raw new herrings (sorry, I can remember how it's spelled in
Dutch) in a hot-dog bun with chopped onions. I would almost pay someone
to send me some by overnight freight.

Generally, you don´t.
You look at it, you eat it, you love it or you go blind.
You never pronounce it.
Oh well, ...allright then: air-t-un-soup.
But don´t tell anyone you got that from me.

maybe decades ago... they're actually "flushed" regularly via the

fairly low crime rate in amsterdam, most "downtown" areas safe long
after dark.

regular shops close 6pmish... cafes, bars, restaurants, clubs open LATE.

trains have smoking cars/areas.

damrak
I must say I've never spent as much as a penny on damrak.
to me it's a street to ride down without stopping.

Is this an answer or a question?
I've never heard of that area referred to as "Downtown" I assumed
the original poster might have been referring to the Zeedjik area
(some oblique reference made to the fear of crime) ....that
neighborhood has a few restaurants, some bars, a hotel or 2, and of
course that vacuum cleaner repair place.
