But we do have stoats, and many people here think that they are
weasels.
There is only a small population of toads (natterjacks, in the
southwest).
Lizards are so rare that many people think that we don't have any. We
found one in the garden last year, and it was the first one we had
ever seen in Ireland.
We have lots of feral cats.

Ah, I gleaned that bit about stoats and weasels. It was on a tv
programme tonight, explaining how nature on the British/Irish "island"
was affected as it was cut off from mainland europe, then how Ireland
was affected as it was then subsequently separated. Interesting stuff,
which I really ought to have learned at school...

In Manchester probably not! They are common enough, usually small
though. There are also more snakes about than people realise, they
tend to keep out of the way.

Yes, but my comment on not having seen them was hardly based on walking
on the streets here.

I wasn't being entirely serious there, they are about, we have six
amphibians and six reptiles that are native.
3 newts, 7 frogs inc two introductions, the viparious lizard is native
Britain and *Ireland*, Sand lizards in England only and the wall
lizard is an introduction in the south of England only.
The Slow worm is also native, (I've only ever seen one or two in
Cornwall) most of the adders I've seen have been in the south, (Pagham
harbour is outstanding) and the smooth snake is only in the south.
so I suspect numbers are lower in the "frozen north"
