Hi all,
I plan to take as hand luggage some chocolates that are packaged in metal
containers (tins) the containers are steel & my concern is will these be
rejected by the X-Ray check & consequently confiscated by the authorities?
If so I guess I will have to book then through as baggage but I'd rather
not?
Many thanks!!!

Nah. You might be asked to open the containers for examination of the
content. Which is bad if they're gifts. That would be the worst consequence
I can imagine.

I'd try them as hand luggage and persuade any overenthousiastic security
staff to not open the container if they should try.

I can tell you for sure that airport X-rays machines can see straight
through tins/tin cans and identify the contents. And if they couldn't
the only likely outcome is they'd ask you to open them.

And you can always offer them a piece!

I brought a Turkish coffee grinder back from Europe and via about 6 flights
as hand luggage. It is about 30cm long, and 5cm in diameter, and looks very
suspicious on an x-ray machine. I simply let the radiographers(?) know that
there was something in there that may raise their eyebrows. Most of the time
they asked me to dismantle it in front of them. It was never a real problem.
If you can open the tins up, there should be no problems. Sealed containers
would be a different matter.

You're not allowed to giftwrap things anymore, prior to check-in, but I
don't think ordinary tin candy/pastry boxes are opaque to X-rays, are
they? IMO, you'll be better off having them in your hand luggage, where
you can pull them out and open them, if requested.

Check with airline to see if allowed in hand luggage or not!.
When being Xrayed, if they cant determine what is in tin
they will more than likely ask you to open the case and/or
tin for a visual inspection.
If it is your hand luggage and gets rejected, its too late
then to put it in your "Hold luggage".
Might have to eat them all quickly.

But they'd have no reason to "reject" them - any customs-related
problems would be at the arrival end (although nowhere else do they seem
as strict about such things as U.S. customs). The only question was
whether the x-rays would penetrate, or they'd have to open the boxes!
(And if it goes in the "hold" luggage, these days, you may never see it
again, since you're not allowed to lock anything.) FWIW, if they were
going to be "confiscated", it wouldn't much matter whether they were
hand-luggage or checked baggage. Suspicious packages are suspicious
packages, if they're suspected of holding explosives, but opening a box
of candy would pretty well demonstrate that the contents are harmless.

They won't be taken away. They may cause your hand luggage to be checked
more closely, but I don't think they will consider your chocolates to be
weapons.

Except perhaps as "weapons" to counteract our on-going "war against
obesity" (8->} (But I don't think that counts.)
