I don't know how cheap you want, but last time I was Cologne I stayed in
the Hotel Callas am Dom, which was reasonably priced with a great
location:

The period he wants is the middle of a trade fair time (Anuga).
Persons are staying in Duesseldorf (45 km north) to get hotel rooms
(and they are paying high season rates in Duesseldorf too).

Greetings from Cologne

I usually stay at the Ibis at the main railway station - as I normally
travel there by rail this makes sense (especially if it's raining) !

There are other (cheaper) ibis hotels in Cologne as well.

The price I am looking for should be as cheap as possible and not
higher than I will have to spend for accommodation. In my search I
include the surroundings of Cologne.
My problem is that during Anuga there is no rooms available except for
hundreds of Euros.

I hope that with the Community help I could find any B&B or
privatzimmer.

This link http://www.hostelbookers.com/booking/?hostel=4009 has rooms for
55 euro a night at that period - not the same place as I recommended, but
it looks fine.

You are right.

hrs has one 3* hotel available at 436 Euro pn

wow!

The following weekend it has dozens under 100 Euro
with a cheapest of 37. The one above charges 99 for
those dates!

Widening the area to 50km has many at 30 km away
around 50 Euro.

That's often the way to do it - in recent years I've stayed in Minden for
CeBIT (Hannover) and in Cologne for EuroShop (Dusseldorf)! If you don't
mind daily train travel it saves a lot of money and it also means you can
more easily get into restaurants etc., which can often be packed out in
the events' host cities.

It's a problem with big trade fairs like Anuga. Prices go though the roof.

In a previous life I worked for HRS in Cologne, a res svc.
Then we used to book boats on the Rhine. You should try an agent I would
say. see hrs.de. Else how about an apartment in Rodenkirchen, just up
the Rhine? Boarding House I think they are called. Don't be surprised to
have to stay in Bonn or d/dorf though. Best. Richard

All restaurants in Cologne cannot be packed if you learn to go a bit further
than the Altstadt
