Default Accommodation in London

Hello,

Can anyone recommend inexpensive accommodation in London for a week for
2 (H+W)? Prefer something nearer to a Tube and the travel time to
central London can be about 20-30mins.

Thanking you,
Vinay

What do you consider inexpensive?

I am willing to spend around 60$ per night for a room which can
accommodate 2 people and with basic facilities like clean bathroom &
toilet, TV (not compulsory) etc. We would prefer something close to a
Tube.

You'll find that very difficult at current exchange rates, but some of
the chains sometimes do very good deals. Check out www.travelodge.co.uk
and also www.accor.com- with the lattter, the ETAP chain is your best
bet, but around £37 a night IIRC- there is one near city airport which
is OK- but it's on the train, not tube, and a bit further away than you
might want to be.

At present rate of exchange that is 31 GBP and I
don't know that this is at all realistic even for a modest
double room. I saw some hostels that offer beds for 12 GBP
a night. I think you would have to double that cost for
a double room in any kind of decent hotel, and even then the
pickings are slim in that price range. London is a very
expensive city for Americans these days.

You might take a look at this site for an idea of what is
considered low cost there:

Not a hope in hell in London unless you use a hostel.

Slim to none is your choice. London is the most expensive city I ever
visit, and I live near San Francisco. You may be able to do Paris at the
rate, but not London. One of the cheapest rooms I could find near
Paddington station (for access to Heathrow) was $100 / night for 2 nights in
2001. Exchange rate says that is now in the $130 range. And that was
probably the worst room as well as the most expensive in a month of travel
in France and Spain.

The Formule 1 hotel in Barking goes for 28 Pounds, but the self cleaning
toilets are down the hall. The Etap next door goes for about 40 Pounds.
www.accorhotels.com

My favorite is the Travel Inn in Beckton, right next to the DLR station, for
about 50 Pounds. www.travelinn.co.uk

Try this site for a look at one of the fairly cheap hotels around Paddington
area.
55 to 60 GBP is more like what they will cost you per double room for a
night.
Hundreds of boutique hotels around Hyde Park to Paddington area but most
around 55-60 GBP per night

More centrally, it is possible to get £45 rates at Travelodge Islington
(this is actually walkable to many of the sights in central London) if
you boook far in advance. There is one in South London which apparently
has £25 rates, again with advance booking. That would be about the
cheapest double room with ensuite around I think.

Hi,

I appreciate all your inputs. I would like to know if the Hostels are
safe and clean to stay? Would we be able to go out for sight seeing
without worrying about our luggage?

Thanks
Vinay

All hotels are in central london within a short tube trip from the most
famous sightseeing. Regarding safety, central london generally is safe
just be carefull who you get involved with. For the luggage most hotels
have safety deposit boxes for you to leave your most important staff.

Hostels I have stayed in all have been both clean and safe, but I can't
speak for all the hostels in London, particularly those that are private
and not members of Hosteling International. All hostels should provide
you with a locker for your luggage and you provide your own padlock.
However, in any hostel, keep your valuables such as money, passport,
credit cards on your person at all times, don't lock them in the locker
and don't leave them around your room. Thieves happen. I keep my
valuables in a money belt and actually take it to bed with me, don't
just leave it lying next to the bed or in my suitcase or pack.
