Unless you speak some Russian, buy them in advance.

If you do spesk Russian, you can buy them Moskovky Voksal (Moscow
Station) in St Petersburg. It is a good idea to buy them a couple of
days in advance, but since there are a lot of trains on this route, I
don't think you will experience any problems.
I recommend that you buy tickets for a socalled Kupe, that is a sleaper
with 4 people (or 2 if you buy tickets for first class). Try to get the
lower beds, because it is more convenient and gives you the chance to
put your luggage under your bed while you sleep. All Russian sleapers
are unisex.
You must bring your passport to buy tickets. Check the ticket very
carefully, so that you are 100% that you have got the right ticket. I
know that Lonely Planet (and I am sure other travelling guids) includes
a very useful intro to traveling by train and hope to interpret the
information on your ticket.

Your hotel concierge would probably get them for you. There are a lot
of night trains, but many sell out, so buy the first day you arrive in
Petersburg.
The rail station is difficult, unless you have decent Russian.
The tickets are very inexpensive, so consider first class.
We rode on the 5th best train, and it was just fine.

It's not a great problem to buy your tickets without being able to
speak Russian. I managed to do it with a vocab of just a few words.
Nothing to worry about compared to the rest of the pleasures you will
discover in Russia.

I agree that it is possible, but it is a good idea to buy a phrasebook
and buy a good guidebook that can thell you what kind of tickets are
available, how to check you ticket, etc.

Always. Russia is a place you need to be prepared for, but I guess
that goes without saying.
