Well, if he needs to spend 3 months outside the Schengen zone, then
that's out. I thought people could get renewals in a few days, like
you can for most Asian countries.

No, that would be way to easy. You can't make a quick trip outside schengen
and get a new visa a few days later.

Spend 90 days in Ireland now and again?
Ireland isn't a Schengen country...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

I'm a US citizen. Would I need a visa for Ireland? I was there in 97
for 3 weeks, didn't need a visa, but that's not 3 months.

I think it's the same as the UK and you get a 3 month 'visa waiver'.

UK used to be six months - has it changed recently?

I gather it all depends on what you tell the immigration official on entry.
If you're taking the classic 'Walking tour of the Highlands' you get six
months (It's at the top of the list of categories that gets a 6 month visa),
if you say you're going to London for a show and some shopping you get less
(probably 3 months)...

Um, back to Europe.
I think the problem in this case is reading skills, more than anyone's
ignorant American arrogance.
