Default "French for Americans"

(This comes from "The Benchley Round Up", a collection by Robert
Benchley)

* * * * * *
2. Accents: The French language has three accents, the acute -e-, the
grave -e-, and the circumflex -e-, all of which are omitted.

3. Phrases most in demand by Americans:

Haven't you got any griddle-cakes?
-> N'avez-vous pas des griddle-cakes?

What kind of dump is this, anyhow?
-> Quelle espece de dump is this, anyhow?

Do you call that coffee?
-> Appelez-vouz cela coffee?

Where can I get a copy of the N. Y. Times?
-> Ou' est le N. Y. Times?

What's the matter? Don't you understand English?
-> What's the matter? Don't you understand English?

Places in Paris for Americans to Visit:
The Lobby of the Ritz
This is one of the most interesting places in Paris for the
American tourist, for it is there that he meets a great many people
from America. If he will stand by the potted palms in the corner he
will surely find someone whom he knows before long and can enter into
a conversation on how things are going at home

I must say the best time I ever had in a hotel was in St. Denis
outside of Paris.. Staying in a Forumle 1 hotel. walking to the
Metro outside of a Carefour Supermarket.

Worst hotel I ever stayed in: "Hotel Whitte Huis" In Amsterdam..
i swear I've seen better hotels than this that were toruched and burnt
to the ground...

Default formule 1 - was - Re: "French for Americans"

Hi,

I've gotten very mixed reviews on this particular hotel.

reports of wild gangs of schoolkids from groups playing loud music into
the night etc.

but the price is right... and I actually recommend a visit to St. Denis
to most folks anyway... to visit the cathedral...

how close is it to the metro... and which St. Denis metro stop... hotel
de ville or basillique?

One point to remember about Formule 1 hotels is that there are no
toilets and shower in the rooms. They are in the corridor.
Etap Hotel and Première class are a euro or two more
expensive but have a shower and toilet in each room.

Hi,

I've stayed at a Formule 1 outside or Rouen and it was fine... and
because of the good value I could afford to splurge a bit on dinner.

I think I stayed at an Etap in Reims... I think they've got the hotel
adjoining the station... made for easy parking.

if I was planning on being in the room more I'd probably spring for the
Etap... otherwise the Formule 1 is just fine...

but I've stayed in other hotels with shower/wc down the hall... from
rooms over a station area hotel in heerlen, the netherlands; Amsterdam
walkups; and my first... Parisian hotels where my parents got a room
with and I got a room without... in those days a room often had a sink
and a bidet... today I see those rooms getting the bidets replaced with
showers.

True, but there are a high number of them. I've stayed in full formule 1
hotels and had no trouble using the facilities. Also, both the toilets
and showers self-clean after each use- they're very clean indeed.

I stayed at the Basillique stop.. or right near it. It is the one
with the little shops and Carefour. (with the ramp for the shopping
carts..)
Stop before the stadium also..

Hi

I was driving from Avignon to Brussels non stop in August.

Shortly after starting I was taken ill. Had to visit the toilet VERY frequently.

So I stopped at the first hotel after Switzerland.

It was a F1. Then I discovered :

No A/C
No toilet in the room

I can tell you it takes a long time for the cleaning light to go from red to green !
