Default Usenet postings = junk mail

Hello All,

As an experiment, on October 2nd, I set up a new mail account on
hotmail. I used it to post only ONE message on rec.travel.caribbean
in the usenet groups.

This morning (October 3rd), the mailbox had 10 copies of the
Microsoft Update virus/worm!

Just a warning that if you use usenet, use a throw-away email
address!

NOT. The use of Hotmail or anyother such webmail is just asking for trouble.
I don't quite understand you post or logic. I have completely eliminated any
worm email from my comcast email acc. with propper configuration. You say
you got worm posts from posting to an NG using a hotmail account? It is
because you have the hotmail acc.PERIOD that gets you the in trouble. Do you
use 'Rules' at all by the way? This is the way to stop emalls you do not
want. I would be vey happy to work with anyone who wants to know more but on
the appropriate NG.

I don't think that's it.

I've been a regular correspondent on 3 newsgroups and 5 Yahoo groups for
years and my @ddress is all over our pages. I get spam and viruses
(virii?) sent to me at about the same level at an old address. I think
my Mac.com server filters them upon receipt as I get only a couple a day
(funny, since the virii (viruses?) don't affect Macs at all.) Most of
the ones I look at also went to all sorts of variations around my true
address, which implies they're trying all possible combinations. There's
one virus that spoofs my @ddress as their return-to that was a bit more
of an annoyance a couple of weeks ago, but again mac.com seems to filter
most of them out these days.

More likely, you've run into another security leak in MicroS..T's HotMail.

I stopped using hotmail and yahoo long ago for just those reasons.

Ok, since there doesn't seem to be much action on this great group let me
ask this if I might:

Does ANYONE in this group suffer from excessive unwanted emails that they
would like stop or even an abundence of unorganized email they would like to
get a handle on and make recieving messages more fun and easy? If so I will
explain in simple terms a VERY useful accessory to most all newsreaders and
email browsers called 'Rules'. I am a bit timmid about posting OT subjects
as this seems to be a no-no on so many of the groups I subscribe to so if
there are any requests on this matter I will leave it up to the long term
'Alfa' poster to ok this type of posting.

Okay Proctor, tell all.
Besides the obvious like masking, not opening email with attachments,
configuring your email client to automatically delete any message with an
attachment, and a decent spam filter...tell us.

Outlook Express:

'Rules' can be setup to achieve a very well organized file system for your
incomming mail. In addition to the 'Inbox' creating other folders is the
key. Right click Inbox icon and 'Create' new folder. Naming as many as
desired to reflect individual items such as Friends or Tech Suppport or
Other. Tools/Message Rules/Mail will show a menu that has to be examined
carefully to get used to. http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/tips/rules.htm
First box to check 'Where the From line contains people'. Next below will be
'Apply this rule after the message arrives Where the From line contains
people'. Click on 'Contains People' displaying line to enter in something
like 'Symantec' then click 'Add' then 'OK' then click box 'Move it to a
specified folder' then click on 'Specified' then 'New Folder' then type
'Symantec' then ok. Now you have one folder named 'Symantec' in addition to
the 'Inbox' and all mail from them will be delivered to this folder. Repeat
this as many times as you want to direct specified mail to appropiate folder
opening when desired. Example: You can easily configure to only receive mail
from only those in your address book. All others may be deleted or holding
folder for review later or whatever. Words in your 'From' line or message
body can be searched to determined if they are words in a list created by
you such as 'Viagra'. Messages will be directed to the deleted folder which
can be configured to delete now or later. Advise to watch that you have not
missconfigured to delete wanted mail for awhile. I added the word 'sex' and
almost missed a requested update on Arnold's bad behavior . I find this
helpfull when in a hurry and only want to read business mail and friends
mail at seperate times without tedious selection and having to 'Mark as
Unread' when I want to remember I didn't have time to read the entire long
winded post from my uncle Joe.

I hope this was helpful and will gladly respond to requests for more hints.

Use a decent operating system that doesn't get viruses in the first place?

Other than that and what you mention, I've found putting "nospam" in my
address to be the most effective. Yes they could write software to easy to
remove it, but they don't seem to, and it's obvious to humans what my
address really is.

I also have two email addresses. One for newsgroups which I will ditch
when the spam gets too much and one for normal email use.

The trouble with filtering your email is that you still have to download
it in the first place. With my previous address that I used on newsgroups,
I was getting about 40-50 a day, most of it in Chinese. The recent Windows
virus has meant that some people have received thousands a day, filling
their mailboxes so that their real mail bounces.

Not everyone can go out and buy a new system or feel like experimenting
with new OS.

A HUGE problem I see is the ill informed friends that insist on
'Forwarding' amusing mail from questionable sources to everyone in their
address book. It doesn't take long for your addy to be distributed
throughout the internet with this practice. Some of my older friends have no
grasp on the fact that "Forwarding" may require you to abandone one addy
after another.

I have several address on several computers on a LAN but have ended up
responding to one post on NGs with the wrong screen name only find it even
more confusing to others.

Rules can be configured to "delete from server". I received a small amout
of HOAX email and never again does one appear while I still read of others
complaining of what you mentioned. Rules can filter all mail to only
download messages that have ONLY your exact email addy in the 'To' line thus
removing bulk SPAM from email farms with several addys on 'To' line.

I hope this wasn't a surprise to you. Anytime you reveal an email address
to anyone (friend, family or newsgroup) you've opened yourself up as a
spam target.

Unless you want to spend the rest of your Internet life hiding from
spammers by using bogus or throwaway accounts, you'd be better off taking
actions to protect your real address.

My ISP uses the Postini commercial filtering service, and I use
SpamAssassin on my own systems.

Their loss.

You can filter mail on the headers. Then you only need to download the
headers to decide if it's spam, but a lot of spam has valid headers. Most
viruses appear to come from someone you know, so you're not going to trap
them on the headers.

I do filter on the To address (don't forget Cc and Bcc) but don't delete
them automatically because some mail I want ends up there too. If people
use contact lists in some mailers, your address won't appear in the To:
header.

I use Spamassassin. It catches most of the spam. I can't remember the last
time it marked a non-spam email as spam and you can get it to learn from
spam it didn't catch, so that it does next time.

Not everyone can feel like experimenting with a new OS?

Of course they can. It's just a matter of wanting to take proactive steps to
solve problems.

Using a Linux system as I do, does not stop the junk mail. It only
keeps the viruses & worms from infecting the system.

I get dozens of junk messages every day.

Reading the mail on a 'webmail' system will isolate your system from
the nasties in the mail since you are reading it on a remote system,
not yours!

I check my hotmail with Outlook Express. I found a great program called SpamBully at http://www.spambully.com . It works Outlook Express and it does a great job. It uses bayesian filtering to filter out spam and is easy to train.
