Default St. Kitts & Nevis

Anyone ever been to either? I'm very fascinated with them both (history,
etc...). Some of the sugar plantations that have been converted into
resorts seem very expensive...looking for something a bit cheaper, but I
don't want to stay in big-name resort where no one is there to experience
the island, they just wanna lay in the sun and relax. By the way, there's
nothing wrong with that, but I don't go to the Caribbean to lay in the sun,
I can do that at home. I want to experience island culture. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.
Also, how are the roads on either/both island(s)? I'm not yet 21 or 25 or
whatever the age is, and so I can't rent a car. I like to bicycle when I'm
in the islands, but some roads are too steep/dangerous because of traffic,
etc... Any info on either of these would be greatly appreciated. Thank
You.
Dave

Look for cottage/house rentals in Nevis or St.Kitts. They're great
islands for exploring, lots to see including 'rain/cloud forest' at
the top of the mountains, and nice beachcombing beaches on the
windward side.

You could probably rent a car there. (At least on Montserrat, they
aren't too concerned about insurance; in fact they don't offer any).
You'd be fine on a bicycle, esp in Nevis, provided that you're fit.

We stayed at the Oualie Beach Hotel (http://www.oualie.com) and had a great
time. The staff is friendly and efficient, the grounds are clean, and the
motif is Caribbean homey. The restaurant and bar are very good, and there's
snorkeling right off the beach onto sand flats and grass bottom, with some
rock reefs on the north end. Prices start around $100 a night.

The perimeter road was recently resurfaced, so biking is easy. Renting a
car isn't too hard but I would absolutely get insurance as you never know
what could happen, plus your credit card might not cover your rental car
insurance in a foreign country. ITA Don is the man to ask as he's been to
quite a few islands and has detailed notes on all the places he's visited.

On Nevis, the Oualie Beach Hotel, Hurricane Cove, or the Inn at Cades
Bay would probably suit your needs, I believe all have websites. The
Island Road loops the entire island, probably within 200 yards of the
beach for about 70% of the trip and is generally pretty flat for biking
purposes.

I have bicycled on both islands. The roads are not too steep. I do recall
one road on the Atlantic side on Nevis that I walked the bike up. Nevis is
easy to loop in one day. Even when the roads there were continuously
patched potholes it was not a problem with a mountain bike. When a road
turns to dirt I just keep on going to the end.

On St Kitts I took two days to bike around. The first day I biked up to
Brimstone (but locked my bike at its base and hitched up the hill),
checking out everything up to that point. The next day I biked quickly up
to Brimstone, then explored the rest of the loop. Oh yes. I try to bike the
former British islands clockwise. This way you will be on the side of the
road closest to the water. Much better view.

On St. Kitts I did not bicycle out to Turtle Beach. I hitchhiked from
Frigate Bay instead. Those hills are a bit steep, though the local
bicyclists do bike them.

These two islands are the best to bike a loop around. I biked a loop around
Grenada, but it was a killer of a ride and I ended up walking up many
hills. Then others don't have a loop.

I can't help you with a place to stay. The dump on Nevis was the worst
place I stayed in the Caribbean, and I bailed out a day early and headed
over to Nevis. On Nevis it was also low-end, but acceptable. Except for the
Nevis kids that were over on St. Kitts partying and broke into my room and
stole a can of mixed nuts while I was in the bathroom in the middle of the
night (and I hadn't bothered to lock the door).

Da Parrot-chick says I have written up all my trips. That's not quite true.
My earliest trips do not have notes. The first was my Nevis one, and that
was written after the trip. Then I started writing them during the trip. In
hindsight I wish I had started on my first trip to the Caribbean. And then
I haven't finished keying in this year's notes. And then I have several
years of pictures that I have yet to organize and put up. What does exist
can be found here: http://donwiss.com/#trips.

I have never taken my own bike. I always rent. On Nevis I rented a pretty
beat bike from a local fellow in Charlestown. On St. Kitts there is a bike
shop in Basseterre where you can get a quality mountain bike complete with
helmet, tools, and water bottle.

Next week I'm heading to the Netherlands. To bicycle of course!

Don .

P.S. On both of those islands you will need to bring along a headlight if
you want to go out at night. (It gets dark around 6:30.) Without a light on
St Kitts I was unable to bike out to Frigate Bay for the nightlife. Now I
always take a good rechargeable light along with me (and transformer).

P.P.S. My favorite guidebook is Lonely Planet's Eastern Caribbean. Before I
go I photocopy the pages of the islands I'm visiting. I trim the pages down
and fold them. Then they fit nicely in my waist pack.

Thanks for all the informative replies guys and gals. This should all help
plan my trip. I'm gonna try to go after first semester ends this year, 1st
week of December. But if I can't then, then I may try for Spring Break in
March. I get tired of going to Daytona and Miami for Spring Break. Too
many loud college students those places! I know, I'm weird, but I like
peace and quiet...island serenity.
