Default Need advice on Jamaica travel-how is Jamaica? Other ideas?

I have heard good things and bad things when it comes to Jamaica. Bad
things are like other places (Mexico, Bahamas and so on)-vendors
annoying the heck out of you, people asking if you want to buy drugs
and so on..

However I found the above to mainly be true if you left the resort and
went into town. Or you were on a public beach.

*****Has anyone been to a resort similar to Breezes Runaway Bay? This
is between the towns of Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.

See map on right side of page at http://www.vacationexpress.com/jamaica/#text_top

We like affordable all inclusive big beach and pool resort that
preferably would have multiple restaurants (4 or more), a few pools or
1 huge one, decent rooms, nice beach (not man-made), and of course all
inclusive. Price we are trying to keep around is about $1600 per
person for 5-7 nights....

We are open to other places (we live on South East Coast) such as
Barbados, Aruba..Already been to Mexico enough, Bermuda, Cost Rica,
Dom9inican Republic, and Bahamas and Anguilla off the coast of
Antigua). Sandals resorts too expensive. St Lucia a bit expensive and
hard to get decent flights. We like the Caribbean.

Appreciate the advice. Of course I have been reading tripadvisor and
Debbie's Caribbean reviews.

Sincerely
Patty

We've been to Breezes, Runaway Bay, but it was quite a while back.. like
10 years or more... But, if you want a general trip report, go to my
personal web pages at:
www.hammocktree.us/ms/trips.html and scroll down to the trip report
named "Comparsion of Breezes .....". You might also be interested in
some of the other trip reports for our Caribbean trips.
You'll see several trip reports from Club Med resorts, and just for
reference purposes, they tend to be about the same cost as Breezes, less
than Sandels.

just returned from the dominican republic where I had dinner with a
guy who organizes trips for large groups. He said he could not un-
recomend Jamaica enough. Drug vendors everywhere, pushy vendors of
other sorts and a general feeling of unease abound on the island.

the DR on the other hand, we had no problems. The vendors were easy
to get rid of and the few people selling drugs kept it very low key
and you would have never known had you not been inclined to use their
services.

We stayed at Sunscape the Beach, and I can recomend it heavily for
just about any kind of vacationer(maybe not singles).

I've been to Breezes RB twice as well as other resorts in the RB area.
Breezes is right next door to a public beach where you WILL be bothered by
the locals. On occasion one may venture over in the water to proposition you
while you're swimming.
On the plus side, these people are harmless and friendly and really only
trying to survive under horribly impoverished conditions. I have left the
resort on numerous occasions and at all hours of the day and night. I engage
in conversation with the locals and I feel perfectly safe amongst them. I am
not black and I fit in with them like a Canadian would in Jamaica. They are
warm friendly people however and they never make you feel out of place.
We travelled on a local bus to Ocho Rios and Dunn's River falls, with a stop
at St. Anne's Bay on the way. That was interesting. We mooched a ride half
way back with a local police officer.
Don't stay holed up in your fabricated surroundings while you are there. Get
out and see the real Jamaica.
