Default Best retirement place in Caribean?

I am looking for a place in (an Island) Caribean to retire in next 2~3
years.
My requirements are simple, should be easy access (2-3hr flight from US
Miami) from US,
since my son and daughter are in US.
Good coral reaf, a place active with tourists, so that I can work part time
as tourist guide, or to run a
small shop for snorkling, small boating and sailing accessories.

Please email me if anyone have any idea, I can also join u or take u as a
business partner, if interested.
As an appreciation for you help, I can give u free accomodation when u are
visiting that side.

You didn't indicate the country you're from, but I'm assuming USA.
Living in non-US territories in the Carib is not a problem for the most
part. Most of the island states have very liberal laws on this -- they
want your money, but working there can be a problem, unless you're
setting up a business that will employ the locals; and then you may
still have licensing problems, and you'll have to get foreign resident
status to do it.

If you move to US territories -- Puerto Rico and US Virgin Island --
you won't have these legal problems, if you're a US citizen, of course.

As far as where. . . 2 to 3 hours from Miami? That's about 1000 to
1500 nm. So pretty much any of the islands, Mexico, Central and
extreme northeastern South American countries are within reach. But
you want an island with convenient air connections to it. And I'm sure
that you want one with a low tax rate, low cost of living, but a high
quality of living with a big tourist industry.

Puerto Rico. (You'll have to learn Spanish.)

If you can go with a non-island. . . In order? Costa Rica. Belize.
Panama. (My cousin's lived and worked there for over 30 years.)

Check out www.escapeartist.com for better info on living and retiring
abroad.

You can get a lot of info from reading this past thread. It is very long

Best source of information on Ambergris Caye is www.ambergriscaye.com -- lots
of real estate information on that site and an excellent, active message board.

However, keep in mind that Ambergris Caye is the most expensive place in Belize
for real estate (other than possibly some commercial areas of Belize City).

Default Panama

I'm researching moving to Central America. Belize does appear to be a wonderful area to live in but I'm becoming more enamored with the islands and coastline of Panama.

I was wondering if anyone reading these boards lives or travels to Panama? I've never been out of the USA but I'm used to living in a warm climate and I'm a pretty easy going person. I don't plan on moving right away and I'm looking at various activities that will improve my options if I do move to Central America.

1. Visit the area at least once
2. Research, research, research
3. Take items that will assist in living there, such as a generator and tools, fishing equipment.
4. Sell most everything I own in the States before moving.

The hardest thing I've yet to find answers to are whether I can take my dogs with me to Panama or Belize. Anyone know the answer on that? Also, do I need to buy a boat in the states (small town day boat) before moving to one of the islands?

Any information or direction you can provide would be of great interest.

Something that kept us in the U.S. is that Medicare is not available for
non-US residents. If you're counting on it for your medical insurance,
forget that.

Check out this website: www.escapeartist.com It should help you
with you decision.

One thing about Panama: if you start a business or buy land to
produce a product there, both of which will employ the locals and
contribute to the economy, you may be granted Panamamian citizenship
as a reward.

Almost everyone recommends living in the retirement locale for at least 6
months, better a year, before making the final decision. A short visit
isn't the same as an extended one.

1) You find the things that aren't perfect,

2) You may make friends who know the score and can help you find the best
property.

For information on Belize, go to the Belize First website, if you haven't
already.

I know (via email) someone that lived and worked in Panama for many years.
His wife was a canal pilot. He was the commodore of the yacht club.

I don't know about Panama, but taking dogs to Belize is no problem. You just
need a certificate from a vet that shots are up to date and the animals are in
good health. Many expats bring their animals to Belize. Keep in mind, though,
that some dogs have difficulty in adjusting to the hot, humid sub-tropical
climate and that they may be exposed to diseases and health problems there that
are not common in the U.S. Also, the attitude of many Belizeans towards dogs
is not the same as that of many Americans -- for example, they may be viewed
primarily as watchdogs and not as house pets.
