I have got my PR visa and am going to visit NZ in December, to validate it. (yes I know it's a long way off, but that's an even longer story!)
I will be traveling around both Islands for 4 weeks
Can anyone tell me or suggest the best place in NZ to live, (I know it will be your opinion!)
Here's the criteria:
1. I don't like big cities
2. Good climate, warmer the better! (least rain)
3. I don't mind what job I get, although I am a mechanical engineer.(forget about the Auckland careers!)
4. Keen motorcyclist
5.I'm really laid back (man!)

I quite fancy the look/sound of Hawkes Bay & the NE coast.
What do you suggest?

Probably the South Island somewhere, Air New Zealand has engineering workshops in
Christchurch and you can easily be in the depths of the country side and still only
be a 30min commute into the city. Summer temperatures are around 30 celcius and
during winter you are very handy to ski fields.

ChCh the only NZ city I've visited, and I wouldn't mind living there myself - big
enough for a cosmopolitan life style, and you can still be in the wilds of Arthur's
Pass in a couple of hours.....

Both islands have got charm, but if I had to live somewhere I'd pick the North
Island. I like the Bay of Plenty--especially Mt. Manganui. Not sure about engineering
opportunites there though.

It depends on how you handle heat and cold. South Island is great if cold is not a
problem. North of Auckland is better if you want to escape from cold, but few jobs
except for Whangarei. Heat does not always mean less rain! Northland is probably more
laid back than South Island.

Work aside, if you like warmer temperatures, then it's the North Island, north of
Auckland. You can easily ride your bike anywhere on the two islands, and both are
well laid back.

Personally, I like the whole joint, but sounds like the Whangerei area might be
good for ya.

Hi Alan. If you are like me and motorcycling if not a matter of life and death, but
more important than that, then come to the South Island. I shifted from the North
Island eleven years ago and love it down here. The housing is good and cheaper, the
people are usually friendlier, the riding is fan-bloody-tastic, and the economy is on
the up right now. As to if it warm enough, where are you from? It is somewhat cooler
than up north, due to the lower humidity as well as the slightly lower average temps.
Christchurch is a very nice place with enough of everything without a big city feel
or attitudes. It has much less rain than the other major cities too. What do you
ride? Feel free to reply directly to me (take the spam-trap off my reply address) if
