Because most radio receivers emit radio frequency energy which
can interfere with navigational equipment.

Why?

Radio receiver's emit a low power signal (more like rf noise) that could
interfere with an aircraft's navigation and control systems.

How do I know this?

I read it on the flight safety card in the seat back pouch in front of
me when I was flying from Sydney last week.

Because radio receivers also transmit.

Wrong again, as always. Take a look at Sydney. JAL and CX screen bags with
an xray before check-in. QF don't. It is not merely airport specific.
