Steinlager! I've been imbibing and enjoying this fine amber liquid for many
years now. Although I have to say my husband is a Tui person.

Monteiths Doppelbock. A wonderful, chewy beer but only available seasonally.
SO COME ON MONTEITHS, WHERE IS IT THIS YEAR???
Speights Distinction Ale. Quaffable but with more body than regular
Speights; the perfect combination.
Speights. Pure and simple and wonderfully thirst quenching.
Cheers!

Here"s another vote for Founder's Long Black. You may want to consult:
The Complete Guide to New Zealand Beer; Keith Stewart; Craig Potton
Publishing; 2002
for one man's opinion.

Re: Question for Kiwis: What's your favorite beer?
Absolutely and without a doubt "Nor'Wester Pale Ale" made by the Dux de Lux
brewery in Christchurch. It's been my fav for a couple of years. And guess
what? Someone else agrees with me as it was voted Champion Beer at this
years Australasian Beer Competition. They have done the almost impossible by
making a strong beer (8.5%) that is not sweet and where the other flavours
are enough to balance the alcohol. If you are in Chch, you gotta taste it.

Here here! I agree. I had a doppelbock in Takaka last year but I can't
remember the name (but then again three pints of doppelbock will do that to
ya!! I think it was a Nelson brew, can anyone enlighten me?

I thought they were all made nowadays in the same brewery in Auckland, with
different labels on the bottles?

Speights.....
But then we export the rights to brew beer like this....
The Pittsburgh Brewing Company, the 8th largest US brewery, has acquired
Wanker Beer established and originally marketed in Auckland, New
Zealand.
The beer will be targeted toward young males . Its label features a
series of six atractive women

The Speights we drink today is NOT the Speights I drank in Dunedin
during the 60's. It may be just that my palate has changed, but I find
the Pride of the South is too similar to CD.
The South should really be proud of what is coming out of the Emersons
brewery in Dunedin. Real flavour and variety. My favourite is Bookbinder
which we have the good fortune of being able to obtain in Christchurch.
Go to http://www.realbeer.co.nz/ for the good oil on NZ beers.

Another vote for Emerson's Bookbinder. (Their other beers are also very
good). And a highly commended for Mac's Copperhop.
If I had to drink a more widely distributed beer, the Montieths range are
ubiquitous these days and their Pilsener is pretty good.
*ahem* James Squire Pilsener has redeemed Australian beer for me.

And a question - while in Dunedin I tasted at one pub (the Rover's Return)
double chocolate ale. It was an import, but needless to say, I can't
remember the brand name. It was undoubtedly the most delicious beer I have
ever tasted. Can anyone inform me what the brand is and whether it's
available anywhere else in NZ - especially Auckland. I could give up wine
for it!

Young's Double Chocolate Stout. Brewed in London, available in my local
supermarket at between $5 and $6, and as someone observed,
proof that globalisation is not necessarily a bad thing.
You'd probably like Emerson's porter too then.

Bookbinder - fruity, full of flavour, *and* available in Wellington at
the Malthouse. On top of that, they sell Gisborne Gold as well.

Another vote here for Emerson's Bookbinder, along with the wonderful
Emerson's Organic (a.k.a Orgasmic) Pilsner - any Pilsner fan really should
try this.
Pink Elephant are another range worth a mention. And the Limburg range is
excellent, especially the Witbier; I find this much more refreshing than
Hoegaarden at the end of a long evening. Lucky for me there's a local
equivalent: http://www.unibroue.com/products/blanche.cfm .
I tried Limburgs Hophead pale ale, then available in Wellington only from
the keg, when I was home in Dec-Jan. That's pretty good, too. So is Mac's
Copperhop, although my tasting experience was somewhat overshadowed by the
price I had to pay for it; Wellington's Molly Malone's has always been too
expensive, but at over $7 a pint I had to conclude that the country had gone
to hell in my absence.
I agree with others that of the high-volume sellers, the Monteiths range is
rather good. I like the Original Ale.
Hops, you understand; hops. If someone can recommend to me a North American
ale that tastes like it actually uses some, I'd be much obliged.
