Two days in Singapore
My wife (by then :-) and I will make a stopover in Singapore, on our
way back to Barcelona after our Honeymoon.
We'll land there on May, 14th at 17.30 h, and will stay in the
Peninsula hotel. We will leave Singapore the 16th at 22.50 h.
What do you think is a "must do", considering we have only 48 h.
there? We'd like to get a glimpse of the life there, to be able to
eat what locals eat, to use the same means of transport they use... to
know how they live, in a few words. Some walking aroud the most
interesting areas (Arab St., Chinatown, Little India?) is also in our
list.
We also want to see the aquarium, do a night safari, and see some
touristic attractions, of course, it is just that we don't have enough
time for everything we'd like to do.
Also... any suggestions about the hotel? We cannot choose the hotel as
is an agreement with Singapore Airlines, though....
Any hints will be gratly appreciated!
Thanks in advance

Re: Two days in Singapore
Hi
I have been to Singapore a couple of times. I have posted some pictures and
a long travelogue on my homepage www.gardkarlsen.com. Feel free to check it
out...maybe you can find some info there. Apart from that I would like to
recommend the pages of The Inncrowd (http://www.the-inncrowd.com/). It is
actually a hostel but their pages contains a lot of good info on Singapore
itself.
Hope you'll have a great trip :-)

Peninsula Hotel is next to Funan IT mall with nearby shopping centre like
Suntec City, Raffles City and attractions like Singapore River and many many
more. Peninsula Hotel is conveniently located near MRT subway.

Re: Two days in Singapore
We spent a few days there last July. The only thing I would advise doing
which you haven't mentioned is a boat ride on the river. Fascinating.

Thanks, I was told that just yesterday night by a cousin who did it
last summer. We'll do it too!
All river boat rides depart from the same place? Any special place to
buy the tickets or any company?
Thanks

Re: Two days in Singapore
Xavi,
If you really wish to go "local", hop on the MRT & ride into the suburb town
centers. The City Hall MRT station is 5 mins away for Peninsula. The larger
towns, moving eastwards on the E-W line, are Geylang & Gelang Serai
(Aljunied/Paya Lebar stations), Bedok, Tampines & local beach off Pasir Ris.
West on the E-W line would be Outram Park (within Chinatown), Bouna Vista
(Holland Village is worth a visit), Clementi, Jurong East. Switch to
Woodlands line at Jurong East to Chua Cho Kang, Woodlands, then to the
Zoo/Night Safari, Sembawang, Yishun.
South on N-S line to Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh (spanking brand new
air-conditioned bus terminal/MRT Station) and back to Orchard Road & the
City.
For some exotics, try the Chinatown wet market (Outram Park station) & its
hawker center above. You'll need to get there early to see traditional
marketing similar to Barcelona's Ramblas market - live frogs skinned &
cleaned, black-skinned chicken, live catfish & snakeheads cleaned
on-the-spot, local & Western fruits & vegetables, etc.
Peninsula Hotel is fine & central for electronics shopping.
Enjoy !!

Re: Two days in Singapore
Singaporeans tend to avoid food courts, especially the air-con ones. Because
of cooking restrictions, food sold in most food courts is usually not as
good as those at coffeeshops and hawker centres.

Re: Two days in Singapore
Zoo & Night Safari are fantastic, Chinatown is getting a bit touristy but
still worth exploring, Jurong bird park is worth a visit as are the Tiger
Balm Gardens. Don't bother with Sentosa Island although it's worth riding
the cable car there & back from Mt Fabier for the view. Mt Fabier also has
good views over the CBD especially at night. Also don't bother with the
beaches. For eating food courts are excellent and very cheap but some can be
very busy at lunch time. If you have time it's worth a walk around Raffles
Quay/Landing Point and the Parliament area.
