Travel by yourself in Namibia?
We were thinking about visiting Namibia next summer, but we actually dont
want to join any packaged tour from Holland.
Can anybody please tell me if there are any possibilities to travel by
yourself in this empty country; is there a working public transportsystem
that might bring us to the outbacklocations or is there a possibility to do
some short tours from any city (like in Arusha to visit Serengeti and
Ngoronggoro).
I understood it might be quite handy to rent a car yourself and its quite
possible to drive yourself in Namibia. Anybody got some information on this
point?
Any information is welcome.
Cheers

I have saved some things that will interest you:
1. A fantastic report on this man's trip
http://www.macdonald.demon.co.uk/holidays/namibia.htm
2. All the Namibia Tour Operators you could ever need:
http://www.natron.net/tourope.htm
3. All sorts of Namibia web sites
http://www.namibiaweb.com/
If you can picture yourself enjoying complete isolation
surrounded by expansive, beautiful landscapes, then
Namibia is the place for you.

Great links, Dave. Yes, you can travel in Namibia on yourslef very
easily. But you will need to rent a car. Forget about public
transportation. There is hardly any at all. Also Namibia is no place for
backpacking. Agian you will need a car. Not just to get around the
(HUGE) country but also to enter any of the interesting areas (parks,
reserves). Most of the country, including Etosha, can be done with a
normal car but some parts do require a 4x4. And Africa experience! A
dutch couple got lost, broke down and died in Namibia about a year ago.
So for some remote parts, it is different. The rest can be done by a
normal VW Golf.

Hans

I agree with Hans,
Traveling in Namibia you should do with a (rented) car (if possible with a
4x4 with rooftent)
Normal cars are available at quite reasonable prices. Fuel is inexpensive.
Depending on where exactly you will travel, you will need a
much more expensive 4x4 (anyhow required for Botswana: Moremi and Chobe)
with camping
equipment and rooftent.
A normal car might already available from 30-40 euros per day. A good 4x4
with camping equipment and rooftent will cost 77 euros per day included
AEDW1
(rental in Namibia, that's what we paid for).
Info at; http://www.iwwn.com.na/
Things to see
Sossusvlei - Highest sand dunes in the world and SPECTACULAR
Sandwich Harbour - south of Walvis Bay with a sea of sand and sea of water
meeting each other and millions of water birds including flamingoes and
pelicans
Cape Cross - thousands of seals on the main land north of Swakop
Goanikontes - a moon landscape just east of Swakop
Spitskoppe - the Ayers Rock of Namibia, north-east of Swakop
Twyfelfontein - excellent bushmen rock art
Look also at www.getawayafrica.com .
Car rentals
It depends also on where you want to start and end.
A good site for information see: http://www.natron.net/autose/htm
Dropping of your car in one of these countries is much more expensive
