Aside from all of the archaeological splendour what's another "must
see" whilst in Luxor?

Up river from the last hotel complex on the east bank (Movenpick?) is an
absolutely genuine river farm complex. (The father refuses to sell his land
for development!). We found that the chap we were talking to was one of the
sons. Becoming friendly he gave us a day on his farm. Absolutely
fascinating. We were shown all round the many different crops, had a couple
of meals with the family, got taken off to one of the islands in their boat.
A really refreshing day away from the ruins. No hassle, no catch, no
ulterior motives, just pure friendliness.
So if it does attract you, it can't be arranged. You'd just have to get
yourselves into the area and hope you start talking to the right people. But
we'll always remember that one.

1 Take a trip on a felucca to Banana Island - fascinating place,
with a fxed price souvenr shop
2 The King's Head Bar - near Isis hotel
3 The Old Winter Palace hotel for a true feeling of what travel
was once like
4 And of course, the shops and bazaars
5 Cross the Nile by ferry, and find the restaurants on the West
Bank
And a little advice on the temples etc - hire a taxi to go to where
you want to go - lot cheaper, and much more flexible. Some of the best
monuments don't seem to be on the tourist route yet - Deir el Medina,
Temple of Seti 1, Medinet Habu to name but a few.

Cheaper than what? The sites you name are all easily reached by bike, can't
get much cheaper and more flexible than that, I think.

Far cheaper than any of the tours organised by tour operators - for instance
£30 for a half day trip to West Bank - per person - less than £8 for a taxi
for 2 people.
OK, they are all reachable by bike or even donkey, but some of us are not as
fit as we should be, especially when the temperatures are high.
