Hi does anyone know where I could take the stove window to get the rope seals replaced? Olhão to VRSA.

Frankly the stove (insert type, recuperador) needs replacing as it is becoming uncontrollable. I'm hoping replacing the seals might help but failing that can anyone recommend a decent manufacturer. Looked on Leroy Merlin's website but too many options to make an educated guess without recommendations. Need something that we can crank down and will keep a fire trickling overnight. Experiences appreciated, thanks J

No one can help size a new unit without knowing the heat output required and there are some easy calculations to do relating to room size and insulation value of the space. Consider a new unit with a back boiler and rads for next time

Thanks. I've already seen those but it's not the glass that's the issue but the seal. Don't think a glass shop could replace the seal hence the question as it's probably a more specialised requirement. As you say there are lots of suppliers of 'rope' on the internet but I don't want to order the wrong size, shape etc. I'm not looking for someone to size the fire I can do that myself. Merely looking for recommendations apropros manufacturers quality vs price etc.

Fireplaces, wood stoves - IN ALGARVE these are based in Faro, I know its the other way but if you look on their website they offer fitting etc but also accessories and maybe able to help.

Thanks RM, that's helpful. Were they the ones you used a while back? I've spoken with a couple of 'expat' installers but not inclined to go that way.

You should be able to change the rope seals yourself without any problems...... and you'll find plenty of instructional videos on you tube to show how it's done.

If you do decide to buy a new wood-burner, check carefully as there are many alternates at the same price point and quality varies greatly. Also, there are good Portuguese manufacturers, which might pose less problems if you need to contact them than for a stove made in the Czech Republic....

When I was looking for a rucuperador, I got "open" quotes from 5 different suppliers. One was quoting down to a price and "pushing" his favourite (greatest profit for him), three quoted the same manufacturer for quality and lack of problems, one spent most of the time trying to sell me something else!

Then I checked around for any comments on the "favourite" and then an architect showed me one that had been installed and working for three years. It was what I needed,so it was just a question of price. You couldn't slip a cigarette paper between the quotes on the equipment, but there was a variance on the whole supply/fit deal - but again, the cheapest was using "no-name" ancilliaries, the second was using known makes. I went for him ...... maybe the first would have been just as good but it was a difference of under €100 and the thought "spoil the ship for a ha'p'orth of tar" came to mind!!

We bought replacement rope and sealer in our local drogaria. No help to you, as it's in Ourique!

But there is a good drogaria at Alfandanga, near Fuzeta and also one on the right, heading into Olhao, from Fuzeta.

If you've got a Bit Mat's store near you it might be worth looking there..... I was in the Coimbra branch a couple of weeks ago & they had quite a large range of wood burners & pellet burners that all looked to be very good quality....... maybe not the cheapest but the quality looked very good indeed.

They had some pellet burners with convection fans that were kicking out an incredible amount of heat.

it may be of limited use to you, because I needed a recuperador de agua to feed a radiator sytem, but the make is Solzaima, very efficient and made in Portugal.

The second installer quoted for Roca radiators rather than an Italian import and some other aspects were better too - and he was really good advising on the cylinder/cylinders for CH/AQS. Most tried to push me to a single, multi-coil cylinder whis is cheaper and slightly more efficient - however he suggested I check the failure rates as it is higher on multi-coil systems (greater complexity) and going the single-cylinder route means you have neither hot water or heating until any issue is resolved. A twinned 2-cylinder solution cost about €50 more and gave greater security..... it also fitted the space better as one fat cylinder was going to fill up my "technical area" whereas the 2 slimmer cylinders allow room for other equipment. One cylinder can also be "parked" in the summer, allowing for quicker hot water replacement.

You get a gut feeling when someone is suggesting things fo you, not their wallet. However, a good conman can exploit that too, so always "Measure twice and cut once".

Have you looked in the drogaria in Tavira, heading toward Aldi from the train station, on the left hand side. I recently purchased a new stainless flue and other bits from there for my wood burner, hence they may supply the rope that you require.

Hi Jonny was in the drogaria in Tavira the one old biker spoke about today, they do various items for the stoves including various ropes with the sealant for around 12eur hope thats some help .

Thanks RM, the drogaria is Irene Fernandes. She's also got one in Cacela so I'll pop down there as it's closer. Probably need to take the window down with me to get the right size. Cheers J
