The American base has been downsized and a lot of locals are having to move elsewhere for work.

I saw this post awhile ago and mean't to check out this island that I had never heard of

Followed it up today on WIKI

Imagine my surprise to read on almost the last line of info that on March16th 2003 a meeting was held on this little island... A meeting between none other than the President of the USA George W Bush, the prime minister of the UK Tony Blair and the prime ministers of both Spain and Portugal.... WHY? To discuss the invasion of Iraq !!! which took place four days later. Anyone else astonished by that little piece of info ?

CNN.com - The Azores: An isolated crossroads - Mar. 15, 2003

Minister Tony Blair and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar will convene a one-day emergency summit on the idyllic and isolated isles, hosted by Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barroso. The meeting, officially to examine prospects for a U.N. resolution on Iraq, will occur on the island of Terceira, home since 1951 to a U.S. air base at Lajes Field

No!

It was big news on Portuguese News at the time.

By meeting mid-Atlantic at Lajes, the leaders, in particular, Dubya were able to meet at a safe location not far from their Capitals at a time when the world was reeling from threats from Al Quaeda!

Is it significant that Ms May has just met up with Portuguese Prime minister Costa...as the bombing of Syria is now on the table?

No... what surprised me about the aforementioned meeting is that Tony Blair was supposed to be in Pakistan at the time, talking to the Generals, whilst Bush was only making threats to invade Iraq ... So a lie then.

Not at all!

PM Costa was on a visit to Belgium & France for memorial services to the Portuguese soldiers who fought & lost their lives at the Battlle of Lys in 1918.

He hopped on Eurostar to visit London and attend a couple of Investment conferences one of which was aimed at attracting UK businesses to set up their European operations in Portugal post-brexit.

His meeting with #theresamayhem only befitted the leaders of the two nations which have the oldest extant treaty of friendship in the world.

Apparently, he also took the time to mention his concern about the rights of the the large Portuguese in the UK post-Brexit, the importance of the UK community resident in Portugal to Portugal and the importance of UK as a source of tourism.

Weird eh? A Portuguese/EU Prime Minister mentioning how important the contribution of the resiednt British Expat community is to his nation.
