Question vigo, oporto, lisbon?

i'm thinking of travelling to vigo over new year, from 27 december to about 4 jan, or something like that, from england. we were thinking of going to portugal first, and i kind of cherish a dream of going to lisbon but so far having been able to find anything out about train times and costs lisbon-vigo... just oporto-vigo...
could anyone give me more information about this? i tried downloading infotren and it just didn't work once i installed it. grr. also, is oporto cool? i'd really appreciate anything anyone can tell me...
thanks!

As far as I have ever been able to figure, Portugal breaks the route down into
national (Lisbon to Porto) and international (Porto to Vigo). Not considering
it a direct route. Here is the Portugese railway website: www.cp.pt
Likewise, the Spanish railway site (www.renfe.es) also claims that is is not a
direct route.

I've done that route many times, but have never not stopped in Porto. IMHO, if
you have the chance, you shouldn't miss it. Oporto is a great contrast to
Lisbon.

Take a look at the official tourism website: www.portugalinsite.pt

Have a great trip. Those cities are great around the holidays.

You have to change trains in Oporto. Look www.cp.com for "national"
schedules ("intercidades")

really ? It works fine in my windows 2000. But it doesn't list
Vigo-Lisbon as Oporto -Lisbon is in the Portuguese network. (well it
lists a connection, but via Madrid - this is not realistic)

btw , where did you download it from ? I use www.tranvia.org - are
there other sites ?

For sure a nice city.

Really ? I thought all OPO-LIS trains were "inter cidades" now. Oporto
Vigo is for sure a regional train. The last time i went to Oporto by
train Oporto was the last port of call for that train.

Of course it is just my opinion but don't waste much time in Vigo.
Ugly and boring, there are lots of more interesting cities around. in
Galicia and Portugal. If you plan some crazy & wild silvester eve,
though, it seems it can be a good option.

I'm not sure what you are surprised by. National merely indicates that it does
not cross borders....it does not indicate the type of train (which in now
looking at the website is a inter-regional train). Porto to Vigo is
international (i.e. Spain & Portugal - CP & Renfe route)

So there was some misunderstanding. Of couse I know Porto to Vigo is
international - i live in Vigo. I am also familiar with the "national"
concept, thank you. I meant that

a) the train is suposed to end in Porto , there is no "through" line
from Vigo to Lisbon according to published shedules

b) Vigo - Oporto and Oporto - Lisbon are

c) different train lines, train numbers and actually different trains
operating each leg (as a corolary from a)
d) different train types. "inter cidades" is what is commonly know
as InterCity in Europe , a premium train . The old and unconfortable
train running from Vigo to Porto isn't for sure an intercty.

Is it clear now ?

And now this is based on

* My own travel experience, some years ago
* Information published by RENFE and CP

Hence the "really?" and my surprise. So if you used a different train
which did not stop in Oporto from VGO to LIS let me know so I update
my info.

Reread my post. I said that I had never been on a train from Lisbon to Vigo
that did not stop on Porto.
