Re: TV and Internet

When we return next week friends want to show us their new box ( the 4th product they have tried since loosing the sat ).
They suffer from a poor internet service so it will be interesting to see.
This one was a one off payment no monthly subscription.

For what it's worth, I've just been into the MEO shop with a friend who wanted to get internet for when he's here in his holiday home and he got a 4G pay as you go dongle for €60 and internet time is €10 per 10 hours.

Re: TV and Internet

I paid 50euros for one earlier this year as my back up when travelling.
You really do have to be selective if watching TV as it could end up costing you a fortune.

Hmmmm can't do "sling box' as we have no TV at 'home' in France. Have very good unlimited ISP now with the Vodafone dongle...w/o contract E39.00 per month w/contract E30.00

I cannot give a full blown review but I am impressed after last nights viewing.Trie
All the channels I need, with catchup on the main ones, and movie club, etc.
Goodbye Amazon and Netflix. Not needed now. If I can get a revised MEO package as suggested then I could actually be spending less!
I looked free options but at the end of the day I want to watch TV not fart about searching here and there and end up with a poor picture.
What I have now suits me!
Happy days :)

Tried to look at their website but it would not connect.
Just got a load of technical gibberish.
What site did you use ?

Viewed a friends system and took it from there. Actually seeing it in action clinched the deal for me. I had looked at websites and been to showrooms but never really been convinced.
Day Two. Tried the movies tonight. Happy Hector!

Yep, apparently the website is being remade... probably because the five year old that made the last one has gone to big school! Haha!

If you want to see it in your own home they do free demos.

Re: TV and Internet

sorry for dummy question, but are you all talking about the 'sling-box' or 'easyuktv' or are they both the same thing? thank you in advance for gentle answer.

Re: TV and Internet

Just did a speed test with my Vodafone dongle tested 3xs to get a mean average:
Results: Ping 44 Download: 7.25-8.35 Mbps Upload 0.24-0.32 Mpbs
Gee, is this enough for stable TV access?

Re: TV and Internet

Er, yes. As long as it's unlimited download that's more than enough. To answer your previous question, the easyuktv box is not a slingbox, it's an IPTV Set Top Box.

To summarise the options then:
1. Satellite - Losing more and more channels, no BBC, need a degree in Geography, Radio and Magic to keep it running if you point it at Cyprus.
2. Android/Linux Box - Was ok, the content is from users but it's free once you have the box, the feeds can be difficult to find but the movies are great once you get used to looking for them and finding a decent version. It's exactly the same as using a laptop, so if that's good enough for you, then you won't be disappointed.
3. IPTV - It's subscription. You pay for what you get. Dead easy to use (It's like real telly!) and there's more channels than I ever needed, plus movies, plus boxed sets, plus radio.

BINGO! Thanks bunches. This is exactly what I want to know. Now I go forth and find a fix for my TV addiction.

Re: TV and Internet

I didn't even know what IPTV was until I Googled it but it looks good.... although I'm rather surprised they manage to get the Sky channels.

Lazlo,

Presumably different packages come at different costs but is there a charge for the box and if so, how much is it please?

Good to hear they've sent the 5 year old to big boy's school and hope whoever takes the site over remembers to put understandable packages and prices etc on it...... If he adds a buy now button p'raps with a Paypal option they'll do a lot better with online sales than they were previously........ and I wish them the best of luck with it. ;)

Re: TV and Internet

In theory can only get SKY encrypted channels if you have an account with SKY UK where " officially " you need a UK address where they have installed ( in theory ) a sat dish and receiver. Subscriptions start from I think £45/month.We pay more as we have the Sports package,
We have Sky and would like to watch SKY GO ( internet service ) when out of the country but like BBC Iplayer etc you need to hide your location via a VPN.
The solution carry a Sky box back and forward , far too much hassle.
What viewers are looking for is a system that will cope with the vagaries of internet speeds in Portugal for the majority of us.
As we have found TV reception via the internet in the winter is much better than in the summer when the demand increases 100fold.
For those of us without 4G or fibra options are limited.
I will report on the " latest " system our friends have installed next month.
There are any number of IPTV products on sale and companies happy to take your money even if they do not work in your area with your level of internet speed.

I paid €200 for the box including installation and set up, they told me there are a few packages, €30 per month for each. One is for us in PT/Europe and there's an international that works in the UK as well, slightly different channels/movies and there's no box sets on that one. There's another one where for an extra€5 per month you can watch on a laptop as well as the TV, but I didn't bother as I only have a small house! I looked around and there's a few people doing similar things around the place but I like talking to people and after meeting them I took the plunge and never looked back. That was about a year ago so the scaremongering surrounding the whole subject has failed to arise so far. Plus if I think how much I used to spend with NTL who became Virgin in the UK I am still getting miles more for less money! I have to say though, it's only as good as your internet service, occasionally I have to reboot my router when my speed is less than 1Mb but it's no big deal. Right, I'm off to watch last nights Eastenders!
