Re: TV and Internet
When checking your internet speed, it will be very variable depending on which server you query.
Most check sites use the closest one, so we get connected to Lisbon. Cracking fast. But try UK or US and it's a different story. I practically never download anything from Lisbon... The original query; the problem is that internet connections in Portugal are annual, so for your 6 weeks of TV you'll have to pay around E600 per year. You could record programs at home and bring them with you on whatever gizmo you favor. You'd have to save them up, and set your box at home to record everything you don't want to miss while you're away. |
Re: TV and Internet
We don't have phone line or cable, lucky s@ds who do, but rely on Vodafone 3G , which although we're out in the sticks still gives us 3mbs download. We're on the On30 package which gives us, surprisingly 30 gb a month. They have recently released a On Plus package for 30€ a month unlimited.
If you want free 'live' TV, as Peter said the free option is Camposat or Filmon via a PC. etc. If, as we are, happy to watch BBC/ITV on Iplayer (or ITV) equivalent one solution is to buy a smart TV or blue ray player, download the UK setup on it, pay £3 a month or so for a DNS server and it's crystal clear, way better than Camposat etc. You are still stuck with the ongoing Internet charge. |
Re: TV and Internet
This thread has been a WEALTH of information as we too want TV and enjoy good programming from BBC and the world at large. We'll only be here 4-7 of the cooler months. But I agree that you must pay for good internet access if you want to watch TV and don't use Satellite or Cable. We're considering checking out the monthly contract Vodafone dongle for E29.00 per month no contract then add an annual internet based contract for television access. (I think this is the same Vodafone dongle you mention Johnny22). We just visited some folks in a small hamlet north of Castro Marin and they have EVERYTHING you could ever want on their smart TV even SKY Sports for Six-Nations rugby for only E39.00 per month. Yes it's an annual contract. Expensive in one perspective but if this is indeed your main source of entertainment (sad thought actually) but then again perhaps cuddling up with your sweetie on the couch with a toasted cheese sandwich, glass of tinto and a good show...is pretty cheap cost-wise to the spend of a night out....especially if you amortize it over 12-months. When you're not there, guests and family who may use the place do like a wee bit of good TV; it's the modern world after all. I personally don't want to be halfway into a program and have it go schkwatch or plan to watch a game and have it suddenly not work. So for me, I'd rather pay the dosh for a reliable system then feel the frustration of a cheaper system failing. Just me though...

Also factor this into where ever you chose to live.. Check that you can actually get a strong reliable signal. Plus of course where in the house you have the tele again might not be the best place for dongle reception. Having had to balance a laptop on a balcony wall as this was the only place in where we were staying that the dongle gave a good signal we can talk from personsl experience. On the plus side the 4g network is slowly spreading so again you might be one of the luckynones. |

Re: TV and Internet
Another possibility for the original poster; a "sling box"
This is attached to your incoming TV cable at one location [UK home], and connected to internet. You still need fast internet at the other end [Portugal], and you can watch whatever you have available in the UK live through the internet connection. |
Re: TV and Internet
Eric, yes, very easy especially if it's a wifi version. Google Samsung smart TV country code and you'll find step by step guides or one of the very many DNS Providers will give instructions for most makes. I use UnoTelly but there are many others.

Re: TV and Internet
I bought a new 32" LCD TV 5 months ago with a Google Tv stick and have not used it at all since I bought it.
We watch what we want to our personal preference on our Tablets and laptops. My wife loves the cooking channels and I watch sport on mine. Anyone want to buy my 32" TV? |
Re: TV and Internet
Is it a smart TV? What make? USB ports?

Re: TV and Internet
Wife says she wants to keep it for our kids when they visit.

I now have a box from the helpful chaps at easyuktv (Yes, their website is c rap but what they lack in webmastering they make up for in customer service!) with a €30 per month subscription for which I now get movies, box sets, 187 channels (See channel list below) and catch up on the popular channels, no hassle and easy to use... which works even when my connection is 1.5Mb (I sometimes get 10Mb but it does fluctuate) I have the M40 Package from MEO which gives me two mobile phones, unlimited broadband, MEO TV (don't even have the box switched on) and landlines with all calls to any mobile or landline free in pt and free calls to the UK after 9pm (But I have Skype for other times) and this costs me €60 per month (I was paying a lot more just for two mobiles with vodafone so I've saved a buch of cash doing it this way). I've seen that MEO are doing an online offer for €19 per month just for Internet so that might be of interest to you. Plus when I am back in the UK I suspend the subscription as it is month by month and get it back on when I need it. Simples. Hope this helps and good luck with your quest. Re: TV and Internet
OMG Lazlo, this is amazing....most important the ability to "suspend" when we're traveling...cool
THANKS |
Re: TV and Internet
You're very welcome, I have friends with various configurations, DNS servers to use iPlayer and other things like VPN services, they are soooooo jealous. If you can get broadband sorted (MEO in Faro shopping are helpful people) or at least phone your current supplier and complain (doesn't always work but it does no harm and sometimes "magically" your speed increases) then I reckon IPTV is the way to go. Good luck with your quest!

Re: TV and Internet
For IPTV, I use Marcelectronica based at Portimão. I've been with them for a year or so and get everything I want on UK TV. The price is very competitive and the service is good. You can stop and start if you need to. Their website is as professional as the staff.

Re: TV and Internet
I have held off subscribing to any service until the satellite situation had settled down and have been repling upon DNS with catchup Apps on Smart TV. I also had Amazon & Netflix.
I bit the bullet and had a box installed last night by the easyuktv chaps. I cannot give a full blown review but I am impressed after last nights viewing. All the channels I need, with catchup on the main ones, and movie club, etc. Goodbye Amazon and Netflix. Not needed now. If I can get a revised MEO package as suggested then I could actually be spending less! I looked free options but at the end of the day I want to watch TV not fart about searching here and there and end up with a poor picture. What I have now suits me! Happy days :) |
