Hi Twinlake
Is the property occupied? We are at the other end of the Algarve, which would be a bit far to come on a daily basis but if the property is empty my husband could sleep on the job (if that is acceptable of course).
He is a great decorator please see our website www.spraydec.com and read the testimonials page.
Regards

Thanks for your replies. Would prefer to use a local person, but quality will be the what determines our choice.

roughly how much do P&Ds charge per day in Portugal? I know its difficult to estimate as most would price a whole job I guess?

Here people tend to price by m2 rather than time it takes. A lot of companies here employ cheap workers (mostly immigrants) who work for such little money that the big boss makes enough from each job to make it worthwhile, but it means tough competition for the sole traders who can't afford to do the job for the same money. An example was we were asked to quote for a 5 floor apartment block, 3 apartments wide. A Ukranian team quoted €1,800 which is surely what it costs in paint! It's so frustrating. The guys must be paid less than €30 a day and not paying any taxes, they put a whole load on the job so it doesn't take long and must cut corners.
Paint is more than double the price here than in the UK, the paint shops have a ridiculous price that they start with then give 50% discount or more to those they know, (you have to prove you are in the trade) but it still makes it a lot more expensive than the UK which pushes up the price of the overall job. There are huge differences in the quality of paint here, being by the sea it really makes a difference and is really important that the best is used along with anti-fungal treatments and sealants.
Our townhouse was painted externally before we moved here 3 months ago by the property management company and already the paint has come off the tops of the garden walls and the side of the house looks awful. You have a lot more work to make the walls good here than you would in the UK and a coat of paint to freshen up is not advisable!
But sorry, back to your question, some decorators take home €30 a day some take home up to €150 a day. It depends on how good they are - just as in the UK, the job - here I've heard of decorators charging €100 per door to gloss which is ridiculously expensive (they obviously don't like that job!) My husband can easily paint 8 doors a day and much more if spraying. So far, we've found working out by m2 and day rate that they both work out more or less the same, and what we'd charge in £'s in the UK we'd charge in euros here.
I'm not sure what perspective you are asking from, as a P&D or client so whichever way I hope I answered your question. ;o)
Oh, another way of working I've heard is by m2 but say if it's just a coat of paint needed that's €10 m2, if there's sealant needed it's €12 per m2, if there is cracks to fill and render to repair it's €15 per m2. Me, I think it's easiest to look at the job as a whole, work out the cost of materials and add a daily labour rate with a set start and end date.
