Hi, I would like to run a small workshop off solar panels, I would be running a 2000w bench saw, a 1500w chop saw, a 1000w vacuum cleaner and a light, these would not be running all at the same time and would be at short bursts. Could anyone let me know what I would need to buy for this set up as this techno is all quite new to me, I would be doing this all myself. I look forward to hearing from you all, many thanks Louise

It would take to long to explain! I recommend you purchase this book £11 at Amazon. Solar Electricity Hand Book; by Michael Boxwell. It will explain all! I started with this book and have designed and built two PV systems; one 2Kw the other 4Kw. There is also loads of info. on the internet.

The book is a good idea. There are many variables with this sort of thing, and the bits are expensive.
You don't say where you are, but I have a friend who sells solar electricity equipment [and installs if you want] in the Lagos area.
He's cheaper than the big shops, and very good and honest with helping you figure out your needs.
There's a lot of conflict of interest with this sort of thing, and salesmen here are all on commission.

I am also looking but for something small for pumping using solar and capacitors , batteries no good die too early due to summer temps so thinking capacitors instead.
Basically its a 24hr 24v aerator , small pv , some caps , and a hd pond pump to aerate the first chamber on a septic. With the ability to use the capbatt as 220v for 2nd grey water chamber to pump through a 3 stage filter and use for my hedging instead of a reed bed.

Use solar for lights and get a remote control generator for power equipment. Switch it on and off as you need it using a key fob type remote control.
I use one of these for an off grid house and it's great but don't skimp on the generator - cheap no-names will only give you grief (and don't I know it!). You'll need something like this or bigger for power, reliability and (ultimately) economy.

HI
Sorry got to his post very late. Have a PV company just across the border in Spain and would happily offer any advice needed for off-grid systems- we've done hundreds
Let me know if you still need any pointers
Cheers
