Non habitual residency travel
Looking for advice. We have our home in Tavira and I have NHR status. We are hoping to return there as soon as travel is possible. If we took the ferry to Bilbao on June 16, would we be allowed into Spain to pass through into Portugal? If so, what documentation might we need to show at the border? I don't have any documentation confirming my status at the moment but could request something.
My wife, who would be with me, has a Certificado de Registo de Cidadao da Uniao Europeia which was issued in Tavira in August last year.
Any guidance gratefully received.

NHR status is only available to residents, which would suggest that you must be registered as a resident and have a Certificado do Registo de Cidadão da União Europeia or better. It's your residency that is important in this situation, not your tax status.

Many thanks for your response, it is really helpful. That is the certificate my wife has a copy of but I do not seem to have mine. Do you or does anyone know if you can apply for a copy of that certificate and also if it would be sufficient to allow us to travel through Spain into Portugal now?

Be careful not to spend too much time in the UK as well, hmrc can review your status re nhr and it can be an expensive error

I would imagine that the best place to start seeking a second copy of your certificate would be the Câmara Municipal that originally issued it. An email should elicit what is needed.

The problem might be Spain. if you aren't a resident of PT,( and have papers to prove it) you would be classed as a tourist, and Spain isn't opening for tourists until July 1. Judging by our experience with Brittany ferries, don't be surprised if that's when they will have their first sailings,so a sea crossing in June may be alittle optomistic.

I would suggest you check Camara website for info.
Certificado de registo de cidadão da União Europeia | Município de Tavira
From my experience, it all has to be done in person.
You can get replacement cert if your details change or if its lost/stolen, in which case you need PT police report.
