New residence cards from 2019.
From next year all foreign residents in PT will be issued with new cards similar to PT citizens. So no more carrying around an A4 size document.

I have a tri-fold card, with name, parents name, date of birth etc, photo, signature and fingerprint. Had one for our first residĂȘncia and a different one for our 10 year one.

I agree with ouriquejan, we have the trifold card (about the size of a credit card, both for British and American. The A4 piece of paper is for temporary residence the trifokd for permanent. I heard many years ago the temporary was a card but there were so many temporaries being issued they reverted to the A4. Be aware the temporary is only valid as long as your passport is valid, ie, my temporary was only for 4 years but I was allowed a permanent as I proved I had been here the entire time (ie, 5 years). That is why some people say they have only had their temporary for say 2 years.

Have been keeping half a closed eye on this (t'other one is permanently asleep).
As far as I can make out without one of these, Brits as third nation persons will be limited to 180 days stay per year, as Schengen - is that right?

That's my initial assumption on the matter from the rather sketchy details released so far, anyway.

I think this is more to do with what information is stored on any(?) resident card than with what specifically will happen to Brits after Brexit with regard to immigration / administrative requirements (which will depend entirely on arrangements yet to be arrived at). It might well be that EU and non EU residents alike will qualify for one of these cards, which I presume will be rolled out to new applicants as of next year and presumably eventually replace any document currently held by a foreign resident only upon its expiry.
