fantastic comments from all of you so far, some are very good and direct to the point. my wife and I will be coming over in march or April 2013 after we have sorted our family out. It is very expensive over here, but that is not our main concern , we just want a different lifestyle, a little more relaxed, golf, wine and good food. Oh and i forgot, strictly come dancing for the wife.......... thanks

" Golf , wine Good food " if these are your requirements then you would be looking at the Algarve or the Silver coast near lisbon.
To be honest neither area living costs would be remotely near those quoted by Peter.
Golf club membership from 3000euros year, budget 45-50 euros round.
March April is a good time to visit,

etc at that price sounds too good to be true ??
Certainly worth investigating

wow... lively thread for a change! Good banter too... don't take it ot heart Peter

I think 1200 is "okay" for a couple but if you have rent money coming off that too?! I am not so sure you will be living comfortable!

We live in the north in 190m2 3 bed house, 2 kids under 5 years old, 2 diesel cars which probably average about 14k kms a year each(both cars paid for), our house is paid, we burn our own wood(no gas or electric heating just air con in summer) and we certainly don't live a luxury life yet we spend between 2-2.5k every month!

the main house bills:

Bottled Gas for heating water & hob 360 euros per year
Water 15 per month(water for our garden & veggies comes from our well)
PT Phone 21 per month
Internet 22 per month
Supermarket/butchers 500-600 per month.
No house tax yet
TV Cabo 42 euros per month

p.s I know an English couple who really do live in a shed with around 700 euros a month and they live a very shitty life here!

Our budget was based on two adults and the difference is clearly in the food costs of a family and transport ( driving mileage 2 cars ).
I think it would be difficult to drive 14,000k/year in the Algarve if you are semi retired or working locally.
