I keep getting a Referência Inválida message each time I try to pay online.
The number is cut and pasted from a SEF document, so it isn't mis-typed.
I've counted it as 15 digits, and ensured there are no blanks at the beginning or end.
An online search confirmed that 15 digits is the right length, but couldn't find any other validation information.
What else could I check?

If you log into the online AT platform, you should see all your vehicles and related tax charges as they become due. Once you click into it it gives you the payment details to paste into your online banking under payment to state. If that's what you are doing then dunno, perhaps visit an AT office instead, they're pretty good at resolving problems that result in then taking your money.

Try typing it instead of copying and pasting, I've found some websites only take the information that way...

The OP is trying to make a DUC payment and not car tax which is IUC.

I tried that but got the same message.
My experience has been that some websites do not let you paste into a field, but this bank's website didn't stop or alter the paste.

I’ve just gone into the SEF site and accessed the DUC, which I assume is a reference number and paid the bill through the bank app on my phone but after I hit the button to pay another page came up in Portuguese except for the word “sorry” in English and a red X. So I do t now know whether I’ve paid this bill or not

Once you get the DUC reference number for payment, you should wait at least another 48 hours before trying to make your bank or Multibanco payment.
