The relevant authority on this says no test required but you must start the exchange within 185 days of arrival.
Click on the simulador in this link to verify.

Australia has signed the 1949 Convention, but has not signed the 1968 Convention (Britain has signed both).
Using Google translate to read the pages, it seems the rules for holders of Aussie and Brit driver licenses are the same.
Holders of UK and Aussie licences are authorised to drive motor vehicles in Portugal for the first 185
days following their entry into the country, providing they are not residents of Portugal.
If they are residents of Portugal, they will have 90 days from the date they become
resident to exchange their license without having to take a driving test.

This is another way in which Portugal is better than Spain.
In Spain you need an IDP together with your Australian license; an IDP is not needed in Portugal. When you're not currently in Australia it's not easy getting an IDP !
Spain will not swap an Australian license over, it makes you start from scratch; Portugal swaps it over no tests.

Thanks Red Eric, that's great information.

Mind you, they haven't half messed up on making that clear on the IMT website. It doesn't mention 90 days anywhere on the "Other Situations" page, which is the one that applies for non EU countries which are signatories to either of the Conventions. And the simulator isn't at all clear on matters either.
