Hi,
Bought a house nr Faro (Sao Bras Alportel) last year and have an IMI (rates) bill for the first time. 2 bills have come one for me and one for my wife for the same amount to paid in April.
- is this right that the bill is per person who owns the property ie 2 persons = 2 bills, both have to be paid for the same amount?
- how do we pay from abroad/bank transfer (we are in the UK at present)? There is a 15 digit Payment reference, but no bank details to credit.
- can we pay at the town hall/AT office when we come back next month without penalty in May?
Thx

Yes the bill is per person and you pay once all the bill or April and November 1/2 the bill. You can only pay from a Portuguese bank account online.
You can pay at Financas in May the penalty isn't expensive
From abroad you have to pay to your fiscal representative and they pay for you.

From abroad, you pay online using your online banking service in the Pagamentos ao Estado or similar section. This will require the unique 15-digit reference, amount and probably the relevant Fiscal No for each bill. Some Portuguese banks' online systems if operated in English omit this section from their menus, so check the Portuguese version too.

Two equal owners = two equal bills, three owners, three bills etc.

Then again,my IMI is so low, it would all but disappear if divided.........

Oh, and I can pay from anywhere, thanks to my Caixa Geral online access.... the account costs peanuts per year (no CC, no chequebook) and gives me all I want. CC from Saga or the PO gives no euro markup at no annual fee and UK account with Metro bank allows ATM use free for euros too.... This is, of course, only useful for those with UK funds/income.
