Default Hurricane Lelie

Do hope that all BE 'rs in the north of Portugal are safe? With limited damage to property. I had no idea this storm had hit on Saturday. Heard about it on another forum in fact. We had rain in the Algarve and some winds. Did wonder why the ocean in Luz was so wild on Sunday . 40+ surfers in the high waves. Something I had never seen before. Apparently these storms very rarely make land in Iberia . ( 5 thus far)
A little like my friend in Mallorca who had spent the day sunbathing by her pool, whilst a village half an hour away was totally devastated , with not only damage to property ,but loss of life. Including two Brits.

Of course that should say LESLIE up there

Whilst I admit to understanding very little having seen the storm mentioned on UK tv I switched to Portuguese tv on Saturday night and saw the reports from the affected areas.
The reporters braving conditions usually seen from hurricane reports from the US.
We had our morning coffee yesterday and the owner told us that she had family in Figuerias who had been without power for over 12 hours..
The boats on Carvoeiro beach had been pulled off the beach so the locals were ready for anything that may come their way.
This is now the time of year for storms .

I am on the coast north of Porto. The storm hit us just before midnight on Saturday. The strongest winds ever for this area. The sheets of rain was almost horizontal but no damage in my immediate area.

A friend of mine up north was driving home on the A1 at 1:30AM, said he was weaving around fallen trees on the highway.
Roofs blown off, power out.
Haven't heard from him since, but he's a resourceful type so I'm not worried.

If you register with Safe Communities Portugal, you get weather warnings and a lot more information on Facebook.
