Default Help & Advice Pls. :)Moving to Portugal - working for UK company

Hi

Really looking for some pointers in the right direction.... so hope you can help.

I currently reside in the uk (am British) and looking to move to Portugal. I have discussed this with my manager and she is happy to support this, so basically I will be living in Lisbon (working from home / from the Lisbon office), but still employed by the UK company, and still paid in £ into my uk bank account.

So my questions are:
1) Where do I pay tax - uk or Portugal?
2) Can I get a mortgage in PT, even though my salary is in £ and to a UK bank - was just planning on transferring money over as & when.
3) Do I need to register as resident in PT?

Any other info would be great - just trying to get moving on this (excuse the pun) but struggling to get any info from anywhere!

Thanks

No expert...but I would think...

1, pay tax in U.K
2, yes you can get a mortgage
3, no need to become a resident at all...though you woild be better to get a fiscal number/numero de contribuinte(like national insurance number) as you will need this for many thins....renting a flat, buying a car, morgage, insurance policies...its easy to get resident or not

I don't know much but I believe the situation you describe is a minefield as to where your NI payments are made and where you are eligible for medical treatment. I read recently somewhere about this. If I find article I'll put a link in

It was actually on this site but on the Spanish forum. I don't know if everything applies or not but the following is the link. http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=628237

I'd get professional advice if I were you.

I obviously dont know how Portugal differs from Spain with tax rules, but certainly in general if you reside inSpain for more than 180 days then you become a Spanish tax resident. Also, in Spain if you live here you are obligated to register as a foreighner, generally called residencia. Is that not the case in Portugal then?

Someone I know who husband still resides in the UK whilst his wife lives in Spain is allowed to claim stuff like child benefit and has access to the Spanish health system. But you will be residing in Portugal, not the UK and I'm not sure how this will differ in regard to you getting access to the Portuguese health system.

Again, i'm no expert but i think this is correct.

I worked for as a holiday rep for 6 years and was on a UK contract and money paid into my UK bank account. I payed tax and NI in UK. Although technically with most banks they won't let you have an address abroad. I had to give my parents address and pretend I lived there (my UK bank accounts are all now closed I would like to add!!). But then that's a whole other issue....

Lucky you - I was with Natwest and they said that if I moved abroad I had to close my account!! So just changed the address instead as otherwise I couldn't have the job. Just goes to show you doesn't it?!!

Well this was nearly 10 years ago so not exactly recent. Maybe it is down to the branch, who knows. Would be nice if they gave everyone the same information though!
