We're home in Wales at the moment and getting fed up with the moaners and people wandering around shops with no masks on. Totally different attitude to Portugal. https://www.portugalresident.com/mutiny-in-restaurant-sector-forces-government-into-hasty-u-turn-on-testing/ |

Plenty of good wine in Portugal, but it depends what you like, not everyone has the same taste. What non-Portuguese wines do you like?
Secondly came Rioja, esp the Sangre de Toro. If I buy a bottle of that I get no aftertaste I get with any and all of the PT wines I have tried over the years. The only one that I have ever found to be palatable after the first glass is Reguengeos plonk, but even that has to be left opened for a week to get rid of the aftertaste I admit that I have never spent more than €5 on a bottle in PT. Lets face it there are so many This Christmas I bought a bottle of Pera Doce Reserva 2018............ermmm....its OK for the first glass but then again I get this aftertaste which I dont like. I have another bottle yet to open called Cancellus Douro 2015, so no idea what that is gonna be like. Does that give any ideas as to a PT wine that I might like?. Maybe the wines I have gone through over the years have been too dry for me?? |

Maybe the wines I have gone through over the years have been too dry for me?? If you like Rioja then maybe try the Portuguese version of the Tempranillo grape - Aragonez. For example: https://quintadator.pt/shop/ProductD...hp?ProductId=7 The other thing you can do is to store your wine (somewhere cool) and let it bottle age a bit. Cheaper wines are often released a bit early and can benefit from being kept for 6-12 months (I always do this with the basic Monte da Ravasqueira, which I like, but find much better after a bit of storage). Doesn't work for everything, but worth a try. Try downloading the Vivino app to your phone as well - you take a photo of the wine label in the shop, it identifies it and gives you information on the wine and user reviews. Over time, if you review some wines, it identifies your preferences and match to new wines. |
Re: Frost resigns !!
I’ve made a strong point to find a decent Portuguese red at a reasonable price but to be honest I’ve come up short every time. And I’ve tried a lot. I’ve found about four that are tolerable, depending on what I’m eating, but only tolerable and not close to the Australian reds I can buy here for about six euros. I did enjoy one very good bottle of Portuguese red that was given to me by the property agent when she handed over the keys to the apartment I bought. I tracked it down to a supermarket but was gutted to see the price label of 60 euro per bottle!

If you downed a glass of this you would order in enough for the year. Proper stuff! |
Re: Frost resigns !!
Re the Douro Cancellus . I quite like this wine. There are 2 called the same name .One is a lot cheaper, but the Premium version is pretty good. Smoother and less heavy. It won a silver medal at a French wine fair in 2019. Mind you, i will drink most anything, but I do miss a good South African red.:drinkwine:

Re: Frost resigns !!
Ordered a few bottles from Plansel before Christmas, since my wife wanted to try their Trincadeira. Just opened the second one: https://store.plansel.pt/index.php?r...&product_id=63
Been very impressed with both - very, very smooth, but definitely not lacking in taste. Portuguese vineyard, German scientific method seems like a good combination! |
