Does anyone know the cost of getting a fiscal number and residencia?.
is it better to pay for some one to do this ?. And what would be the average cost?
Or is it easier and cheaper to do it yourself?

To get a fiscal number you need a fiscal representative. Its about 250 a year for a couple.

Surely they don't need a rep if they are living here full time?...just go to finances and do it themselves 
Residencia,Tit you will need to go to your local Camara,they can sort it for you there and then.You will need a paper from your local Junta which states your Portuguese address and confirms you live there.Passport,fiscal...umm,think that's it.They will ask you a couple of questions,(Father and Mothers names,are you working etc)prepare a document,which will have to be signed by the president,usually takes a couple of days,you go back and collect it...quite simple.I'm sorry but it's been too long for me to tell you the costs,but both are minimal.
Don't fall into the trap of paying other people to do things for you,it's a rip off,and the best way you can learn the wonderful workings of Portugal(
) is to do stuff yourself.

When we applied for residency last January it cost €7 each. All we had to show were our passports and fiscal cards

T don't be conned by the unscupulous; in total FN & Residencia shouldn't cost more than €20 (not sure of current costs: €14, 01/2008). But, as standard, allow yourself plenty of waiting time.

Actually residency is pretty quick these days. We went in to the camara, filled out a form and handed it over and were told to come back in 2 days. The process only took five minutes. We went back, paid our €14 and picked up the papers. Again, only 5-10 minutes.

Last year our solicitor advised we appoint Sovereign to represent us and obtain our fiscal numbers on our behalf. This cost us E265, and the said fiscal numbers where produced as promised. Unfortunately Sovereign are requesting a renewal fee of E250 for 2009 with the advice that as we are not residents, it is Portugeese law that we must have fiscal representation. On payment,they will then be our representatives for all tax matters in Portugal, and all demands will be handled by them, for, of course an additional fee.
