Fiber optic internet options
Hi all,
I did a research and found 4 main fibre optic internet operators here:
NOS
MEO
NOWO
Vodafone
As of quality of service I heard more good feedbacks regarding NOS, but it's expensive.
I'm looking for anybody who may share experience regarding NOWO - they have the best price options.

I think you might be looking at it the wrong way round........ Internet here varies immensely by area so you need to look at what's best in the exact location you're in or considering.
We have a great package with Meo that gives us really good fibre optic internet & landline phone & nothing else............... No TV or cellphones but just down the road they can only get a little better than dial up speeds.
Meo promised us 100 Mbps & that's pretty much what we get.

I checked the location I'm going to rent and regarding the websites of providers they all can provide a connection.
It's in Setubal, not a remote area.
May I ask you how much you pay for MEO and how long is your contract?

We pay about €30 per month but they offer a similar package that you can turn on/off by the month without contract for about a tenner more.

Re: Fiber optic internet options
This is for a fixed line connection with phone plus unlimited internet at high speed all for 40 odd euros a month and switch offable ( with zero standing charge ) for six or so months a year ?
If so sounds exactly like what I would need ........Is there a connection charge ( there is a v old 'phone line to the house I am considering but I imagine it would need renewing for fibre connection ).
All info gratefully received.

We have MEO in Albuferia and only average 10mbps. Stuck with it until August as the apartment owner took a 2 year contract out.

There , may, may be fibre to the nearest main junction , but unlikely it is to your property or development.
You could still be connected by a few 100mtrs of copper.
Meo have fibre in Carvoeiro but no Where near us, but they still call offering a premium high speed connection.

Went today to NOS. Bought a 4G modem which they discounted to €29.90 and unlimited internet for a month for €25 with no any longterm contract (sem fidelização), so if I don't like it I can cancel it in any moment.
The 4G speed by speed-test is between 5-10 Mbps up/download in my place, so pretty well I think.

Could you provide more details about this latter switching off and on option ?

Oh yes, the MEO telesales people are notorious.
But what I meant was, if you look at the packages on the front page of their site or delve around a bit for a price for something more bespoke, anything described as "fibra" must be right to the door. And they can't sign you up for one of those unless they can provide it.
Most of the complaints are about non-fibre connections, which only deliver up to a max speed of whatever-it-is but it's frequently slower, so people think they've been hoodwinked.
You have to make sure you know exactly what you're signing up for, obviously.

If so I would be v v surprised if you could use it to stream Netflix / download films etc - all the heavy usage stuff ?
Aren't you going to come up against a 'fair usage' policy ?
But would be pleased to be surprised.

I take it this is a mobile internet solution ? With a little device that receives the signal through the air, not via a line ?

Ensure you have decent 3G or, better, 4G reception where you are, you only need 3mbps to stream. I find Vodafone the best where we are and NOS the worst but horses for courses.
Invest in a decent router, not the mifi they give you for free.
A decent router can be hardwired to the TV so better connection.

Re: Fiber optic internet options
Me too Jonny22.
Originally my MEO landline gave me 1.5Mbps. I switched to MEO 3G and get between 15-20Mbps. Strangely 4G is slower so I locked it to 3G. I use a Huawei B310S router, which was supplied by MEO, linked to a Fullband MIMORAD antenna. I can stream just about anything, although HD at 1080P can buffer sometimes. Had it for about a year now and never had a problem with data restrictions.
I also have a Huawei B592S which I tried with a Vodafone PAYGO SIM. Faster but data caps put me off. I use that elsewhere.
NOS was a non starter as reception very poor.
