At the end of the day it depends on how much you get for how much you pay, with or without fees.
If JL offer a good rate AND are fee-free, then it's a good deal.

Has no-one heard of transferwise? Rate 1.158 no fees or other nonsense.
John Lewis 1.1037.
Am I missing something?

That JL rate was based on independent research by Consumer Intelligence during 03 October – 31 October 2016, using data obtained online from 3,848 data points during the period stated above for sending £10,000 in €.
Makes it easy to compare, doesn't it?

OP's link seems out of date, but JL current rate 1.1363, well below transferwise.

Using a tool from XE.com it would seem that the standard JL rate is about 3.2% worse than the mid-market rate (based on £1,000) compared to 0.5% with TransferWise. Saving the £9 JL transfer fee helps to reduce the penalty from 3.2% to 2.3%.
