hello fellow members.
I Carvoeiro based & i am pondering on which brand of paint to use for my external garden wall & also where to buy it from? I have been told to use CIN & buy it from the CIN shop at Fatacil & also been told to use Roblec or Robolec as that is good paint & theres a place in Sesmaris that sells & also been told that Sulcav at Fatical sell good exterior paint.
I am a great believer of buying good paint & I always use Dulux or Crown back in the UK but I have little knowledge about the brands etc in Portugal & any advice will be really appreciated

Hi Alf
i made the typical error here - used - as recommended - exterior tinta plastica - picked the most expensive supermarket brand -did some prep by hand - then two coats - first heavy rain it all washed off
So i redid it - Luxens paint- from the very large Leroy merlin at guia
still looks perfect 3 years later
important in Portugal you prepare correctly
you must remove all of the mould and loose paint - green or black before painting - only a good quality jet wash machine will do this or it will come back through in a year or less
then prime any bare cement
nb - if you jet wash paint - ALWAYS WEAR A mASK - some very harmful stuff in old paint -mould
then two coats of your good quality paint - should last 5 - 10 years depending on location

the advice from my local decorator was - it doesnt matter what brand you buy - if you dont spend a minimum 50 euros a tin its rubbish - note- robilac which is well regarded also makes several cheap paints - i used one of them - also a disaster

Sounds like the Luxens is a decent paint then ? Thanks for the advice about the prep work. I have a small karcher jet washer but its pretty powerful so I think it will be up to the job.

I go with CIN which my builder friend says is better quality.

Looks like that within each brand the quality for the same paint reference varies in time (like wine) and as my friend says CIN is top "at this time".

I used CIN for the exterior and its OK

I think this is one of the really big problems with selecting a paint. By the time you are able to express an opinion on the paint's durability, it's probably been reformulated. That works both ways - a poor paint may have been improved.

The best we can hope for is to ensure that the preparation and application is done as well as possible.

Took the plunge today & bought a 15 litre tin of Luxens exterior paint so will prepare the wall in the next few days & try it.

Been using the Luxens paint that we bought from Leroy merlin & it covers like a dream ! We did as you advised & got rid of all the mould etc. Lets hope it lasts !

hope so - two coats are always necessary for a long lasting paint job here
i found with that paint you could do the second coat the day after

We have done 3 coats as it was lovely weather & by the time we got to the end of the wall it was dry so we put another coat on ! The paint we bought had an extra 15% in it so we got 18 litres instead of 15 litres, we are thinking of buying another tub while its on offer as at €49 we think its a bargain.
