Default EDP disconnection charge

Anyone know how much it is? Our meter is not by the road and it would mean flying out especially and hope the meter reader happens to pass by. Three strikes and you are out ☹️

From memory about €15 but the re connection can take up to 24hrs after you made payment. The re connection cost will be on the next bill.

Crikey that is a relief, I was expecting a large punishment although trying to get reconnected from England could be interesting!

Can you not notify EDP online? We renewed our contract with them from the UK online and it was surprisingly easy. When we sold our property last year we dealt with EDP online for meter readings and final payment and again no hiccups.

But why should they believe your reading?

I'm sure they checked it out when the meter reader was in the area, plus they could compare it with previous years to check its likelihood for being correct. They have our bank details and we paid by direct debit, so if there was a shortfall, they could recover any amount due.

Like yourselves, our house was not on or near the road, but there are other properties within the vicinity they visit in addition to ours. Whatever difficulties there might have been, it worked OK for us. Hope you achieve what is best for yourselves.

When we are not there to let him in he cannot read the meter. If it happens 3 times in a row you are disconnected. We have EDP online at home in the UK and receive our bills that way but they still need to see the meter every now and then.

You seem relaxed about the possibility of disconnection which leads me to assume you are not running important appliances (freezer, pool pumps etc) when you're not there. If so, why not submit your own reading when you leave and re-submit the same numbers (via EDP Online) every so often at the appropriate time until you return and then repeat until they can make their own reading? At least they'll have readings recorded rather than blanks.

Out of curiosity, where do they disconnect you if they can't access the meter?

I DO submit redings online but that is only good until the fhird time they cannot read it! We just have the pool pump running. I have no idea how they turn us off but they did last time!

So that plan's no good then! I don't suppose your pool appreciates the lack of filtration either.

You could try to request a new smart meter that submits its own monthly readings automatically. We've got one now and no longer get estimated bills or manual readings. Obviously there's the difficulty in arranging access for the meter change but probably no worse than arranging each reading.

Do EDP supply smart meters? Do smart meters require internet access?

I can't find any links to show the type of meter we have or how it works but it's certainly smarter than its predecessor. It incorporates the power limiting trip which is set to match the contracted potência but for example can also (with some digging around in its user menu) display instantaneous readings of current drawn on each phase which is useful for balancing loads between phases.

It certainly doesn't use our internet connection so I assume it uses some form of power-line communication to send readings etc.
