Re: Decent Bank
Another vote for Millenium here. They overcharged me a few months in a row. One phone call (in English) and a few days of waiting and it was all resolved very easily. App never gave me any problems. Haven't been in the bank since I opened the account

Millennium here too. Really helpful in Castelo Branco and Lisbon. Sorted basic health insurance for over 65's no problems. A bit iffy about paying in GB pounds in cash ( wrote down all the serial numbers on the notes !! ) but generally good. We were going to go with an online bank but real people help is better every time.

Re: Decent Bank
Could that have been lost in translation - no pressing for us to take insurance with them, though we did eventually change our house insurance with them as it offered better rates and better conditions than the one we were with! Car insurance is done elsewhere and there is NO obligation to take insurance out with the bank ... definitely an optional extra. Are you saying that a person who does not need either house insurance nor car insurance could not have a bank account with Millennium? Surely not?

Re: Decent Bank
To be honest I feel that I couldn't really recommend a bank in PT. Their little debits here and there for the slightest reason. (€5 here another €6 there for something else)Some I havn't a clue what they're for.Current one charges for the fact we have a joint A/C not individual. It really annoys that they charge you ,for them to be able to use your money. And generally to top it all they're not very efficient and don't even ask about the queuing! The Portuguese are such patient people...... .Having said that they have improved since my first experiences back in the 80's. One on the desk and 5 behind doing nothing but twiddling their pens and having a cigarette.

... and I do object to paying for a "service" I'd complain about if it was free.

Activo. They use an mobile phone app or online but, mainly, they do not charge a fee so you can set up an account and try it out and if you don't like it just stop using it. They don't have "branches" but do have some "offices" where you can go and get personal services (like opening an account) and they hand over a debit card and a sealed PIN then escort you to one of the office ATMs to check you are not a complete buffoon. No appointment needed just go in and add your name to the interactive list (display) and wait to be summoned. You do need an mobile phone. Activo is owned by Millenium BCP but they do not share data.
