We found that agents often didn't call us back and we ended up buying through a Portuguese estate agency but the actual agent we dealt with was Spanish and said he only called us back because he was intrigued by our Spanish mobile number! He was very helpful though.
In you situation, I would drive over to Castro Marim and visit a few agents in person. It seems crazy but you have to push the agents to show properties in Portugal it seems - we certainly did. If you walk around some of the towns and villages, you will see private 'for sale' boards and you can contact the vendors direct.

We have called a few private sales but my Portuguese is not good enough if they don't speak English, the latter is usually the case. The agent we are in contact with would phone for us but he's on holiday until next week and we haven't seen any for sale recently, but it is worth pursuing. We did call one house before Christmas, the agent had heard they were asking for a price that we could afford, it was almost perfect, the agent called them and they now want 400 k + because they think they can get 10 house there or something!

Hi everyone
I am 44yrs old, and moving to castelo branco for flight school.
I come from a big city and i am concerned that i won't find a way to fit in because i don't speak Portuguese.
I am looking for:
- expat community in the castelo branco city(not outside as I don't have a car)
- dance school (in english)
-yoga and meditation (in english)
I added myself in some communities on facebook but still difficult to meet anyone in the city.
Any help would be appreciated

Avelar, Ansiao and Penela are part of our general area. We actually live at Serra do Mouro, just outside Chao de Couce.
During the summer months it gets hot, but nine times out of ten with a nice breeze.
In the winter there is quite a drop in temperature, therefore central heating is a must.
There is some sort of bus service, but I've never worked it out. So would say a car is also a must.
One of the reasons we chose to live here was, you get a decent property, for reasonable money.
Unlike the UK which is our next stop, but age is beginning to catch up with us
