Default Cars (Again!)

Hi everyone, just a quick one about cars again, if the MOT runs out while you are in Pt is there a garage that can test-issue a UK MOT certificate? Thanks again.

I think the answer is a simple "no"

I have heard of people getting one sent over but of course this is not legal

No. Although I have heard this a couple of times recently. How would Ministry of Transport grant a licence and inspect? Steer well clear!
You can have your car inspected at IPO centre though. Keep GNR happy. Not accepted in UK despite it being a much better test!

Hi, just go to your local IPO test centre and they will give you a test. When you go back you don´t need an MOT in the UK as long as you make an appointment with a garage to have the car tested.

The actual wording is more like .... You can drive the car to the test center without having an up to date MOT providing you have an appointment.

You have a bigger problem than the MoT - the day it expires you are uninsured. You may end up breaking the law in four countries just to get it back to Blighty!

Check with your insurance company or broker. The companies offering specialsied policies here normally accept IPO certificates as proof of roadworthyness in place of MOT.

But then the old pimple pops up again, the vehicle has to be road legal in the country of registration, and without tax and mot it is not.

Please point me in the direction of the piece of legislation that dictates what documents the insurers can and cannot accept.

It makes no difference what the Insurance companies accept, as the vehicle is probably in the country illegaly anyway.
As I have tried to explain to you on many occasions, the insurance companies do not write the driving abroad regulations.
Read HERE, and download the V526 form for taking your UK car out of the country.
If the car is to be used abroad over the time limit then it has to be exported from the UK and imported into the host country.
It can only be used on a tourist basis and should be insured, taxed and mot`d and owned by a resident of the UK and returned to the UK within the time limit, otherwise it needs to be matriculated.

Feel free to quote me from any thread where I have said that the Portuguese regulations regarding the use of foreign registered vehicles should be ignored? I'll save you the trouble, there isn't one.

The man asked a simple question. Can he get his car inspected here if the MOT runs out while he is here? The answer is yes.

If he is here for an extended stay, he may have arranged insurance locally which is why I suggested he check with the broker/insurer to see if they will accept an IPO as proof of roadworthyness.

Believe it or not there are some folk here who use their foreign registered cars legally and need the correct advice to help them. As a moderator surely you should be presenting all the facts, not just a select few? Maybe point out what people can do rather than what they cannot all the time?

I do take your point Mike, that you are playing with a straight bat etc but many people are seduced by the grey areas when in reality the situation in Portugal is black and white.

If you have a UK registered car and its MoT expires then it is no longer taxed either; you cannot tax a UK anywhere but the UK, so everything else is academic. Insurance will no longer be valid either. So if the OP has a car worth any money, he should get it back to the UK now before his MoT expires.

Most insurers policies do not have a clause regarding road tax. It is not a requirement.
You can also tax a foreign registered vehicle. Speak to your local Financas.
