Re: Royal Cayman Islands Police and St Helena Police
Lils, It was a bit different to a UK style board but I got the usual diversity question. They were keen to know my about my experience in investigating gang violence and how I would generate information from the Public. They are keen to recruit people good at cultivating informants (not easy here I can assure you). The Met corruption investigation has left the force with very low morale and they are suspicious of us UK Officers telling them how to police (anyone from the Met can expect a grilling!). There were several questions about 'integrity' I got a bit confused here as I said the standard 'I'd report it despite whoever or whatever it was and it's non negotiable blah blah' but one of the interviewers didn't seem to like this answer. In the end I sat on the fence and said that I would judge each circumstance on it's merits. One of the examples they used was your colleague being a little heavy handed with a prisoner yet the prisoner deserved it. There is no PACE here so I wouldn't compare it to the UK, in fact I regularly get told this is 'K-mon' not the UK.

Very good documentary here:
youtube.com/watch?v=iakVCvPzcvI
It deals with Trench Town in Jamaica which is the nearest neighbour to Cayman, more importantly Cayman has a large Jamaican population. Many have said (those of us that now reside here since the upturn in crime) that Cayman resembles a mini-Jamiaca.
Others here will have you believe that the streets are paved with gold, and policing is a fun challenge and the people are all laid back rum drinking fogies. Furthermore you will be trained up and given skills in all manner of things from jet-skiing to flying...
See the documentary for a reality check.
Or you can always check the latest online newspaper edition for the latest armed robbery, murder/att. murder.
Of which there was one yesterday!! (armed robbery that is). Is that a coincidence or what....?

Looks like it's going to be a bigger mini jamaica now!

Re: Royal Cayman Islands Police and St Helena Police
Hi All,
I was interviewed at the begining of this year, got the job and started about a month ago as a DC in George Town. The Jury is still out at the moment on whether or not I have done the right thing, there have been massive highs and absolute rock bottom lows when I thought of getting straight back on a plane. I haven't stopped since starting work and things are done very differently here. I'm on $53K tax free including allowances etc. but I cannot believe the price of everything. I thought I'd be minted but it's not going nearly as far as I thought. I have heard that I was one of the 'lucky few' and the contracts for new recruits are likely to have changes to the conditions. Rumour has it that there will be no A/L for the first 9 months of working and if you decide to leave before your contract is up you will have to pay back all the resettlement costs and allowances, currently about 7K. There are issues with regards to the non expats lacking in experience and an idea being mooted is to swap them into CID/Specialist roles etc for a while so the likes of me will end up on shift to cover, fingers crossed this won't happen as I don't fancy being out in uniform.
Any questions let me know and I will try my best to answer them when I have a few spare minutes. Cheers Duffers.

What sort of UK Service have you got?
Is there a 'nicer' area to live over there and anywhere to 'avoid' ?
Cheers.

Re: Royal Cayman Islands Police and St Helena Police
This may seem like a stupid post as given the topic has moved away from St Helena and is focusing more on Cayman, I don't have anything to add to the current debate. But I'll plough on nonetheless...
I just wanted to advise those people considering Cayman to take the info they are given seriously, even if they may think particular posters are "bitter" or whatever else. St Helena is not as bad as Cayman sounds, but there are similar issues for ex-pats. We were warned of these by a couple of people before we got here but we were so excited and hyped up to be coming, we dismissed them for various reasons, ie, "Oh well, he's probably having problems because...." and "She's saying that because...." etc. While our justifications to ourselves may have had grounding, so did the warnings we were given. I'm sure everyone is sensible enough on here to be taking all comments into account, I just wanted to put that in as a personal experience we'd had ourselves.

Umm, okay, I've had time to think this through. It's a bit sh!t at the moment, to be honest. I don't mind being busy, but there's no overtime, and I've had my 3rd weekend off cancelled - yet again - on Friday afternoon. The wife's not happy. I'm told we'd get TOIL further down the line, but there's another guy that's been waiting 6 months to re-roster his TOIL and he keeps being fobbed off.
It appears once they get you here they take advantage of the fact you can't return home and 'take the piss' with you.
I'm getting fed up with the workload and the general treatment of the rank and file. A lack of any federation or the like is a big problem. I just seem to get more and more piled on me when I question it the boss tells me I'm 'not here on vacation but to work'. I knew I'd be busy but I did think at least I'd have a few weekends off.... I wanted to take up diving and fishing!. I will get back to you re your questions when I can I haven't forgotten.
The upside is I've discovered the local delicacy of rum cake and patties. Not good on the waist line but very tasty.
