Can you say anything about what the move is like (how to get housing - any good websites or contacts to look into) does the force help with this at all? Also what area is best to work in or choose (if there is a choice!)? Finally, my partner would be coming with me - however he is not British born (he is an EU citizen and has settled status in the UK having lived here for the last 11 years. He is also self-employed. Would Australia accept him do you think?

Would be great to get your insight on this.

Thanks
Hi Noodle,

In relation to the logistics and ‘do’s and dont’s’ of making the move, your best resource is probably the Australia section of this forum.

The housing situation is tough here at the moment, with allot of demand for rentals and house purchases. Of course, to some degree it depends on where you are moving to, some places are more popular than others. A possible solution could be to live at the academy whilst you do your lateral entry course, during this time you could sort a more permanent solution out. Your partner could then follow when you complete the course, or have accommodation.

When you say ‘best area to work,’ if you mean best place to work / live, it really depends entirely on what you are into. If you mean best department to work in, it again, depends what work interests you. However, I would suggest if you take the job, you are more than likely looking at least three years on shift before being able to specialise. You never know, you might get lucky, but it’s unlikely. Realistically, you need time in the QPS to build a QPS resume, so you can have a prospect of being able to compete for specialist positions. I would suggest, more than likely, you’re being hired to fill gaps on shift, for a few years at least. People who come here thinking a red carpet is going to be rolled out, and put strait in traffic or CIB, are usually disappointed.

In relation to your partner, I have no idea. I would suggest, for both of you, if you want advice, or decide to go ahead, using an immigration lawyer. It just makes things much easier, and your paperwork will be accepted by immigration first time, preventing delays.

Hope that helps 👍

Okay thanks I'll check out the Australia section yes of course I would expect to be posted to response if I did get offered a job. I just wondered if you get a choice on the area where you can be posted to (for example; in the the MPS you can give them three boroughs of preference - or used to be able to!)?

Hi Noodle,

I’m in a similar position to yourself, coming from a force in the UK; however I’ve only just registered my interest with QPS.

I have a few questions about the process, am I able you PM you on this thing or is there another messaging app I can reach you on if you’re comfortable with that?

Also thank you Baz for your input, really insightful!!

Hi everyone,
I also applied. Done the fitness and it seems they are doing vetting before the interview and psychological tests, medical etc. They asked for contact details for the disciplinary checks and well as police certificate

Baz, thank you for your post. It is very informative.
I have a few questions for anyone who can reply
So far I have done 6 years in the UK. I think QPS is a better choice than WA. Would you agree?
Also, would you say interview and psyc test are similar to the ones we have in the UK? Is there a surprise?
In general, I am wondering how long the process will take and the posting locations. If anyone has a guess I appreciate that
As far as I understand, when and if we get a job offer it will come with a region named as your new post. We will then have a chance to apply for a (available) station in that region at the academy. I have a 9 y/o son, so I am a bit worried about his education opportunities if I am posted to a small town
Thanks

Hi Pat,

Just send them an email outlining your police experience. Their email address is on their website.
Also attach any documents such as a degree diploma if you have any
They will reply to you within usually 2 weeks time with the next steps
Feel free to pm me if you need more info
Good luck

Hi Baz
Quality post as usual from yourself. FYI, I've left Cayman now after 5 years and moved to Guernsey. Different again from Cayman and very different from the old F div. Unfortunately QPS isn't an option for me now. Need to be closer to home for the 1st grandkid and she who must be obeyed had had enough of living overseas. To re-iterate what Baz has said, don't make the move just because TJF where you are. Job is job is job EVERYWHERE. For UK cops in particular thinking about this, you will be a long way from home and your first year is without doubt the hardest. My mate went to NZ and lasted 6 months as his wife just couldn't settle. For you singletons out there with no ties DO IT!. Living abroad in a lovely climate is amazing.

Well done on your interview! Yeah something like that! I haven't done my fitness test yet. Dr's have been dragging heels with giving me an appointment to sign me off to do it.
