My advice to you would be to pop down to Argos and buy a pull up bar you can put in a doorway of your house. The only way to get good at pullups is to do them everyday! I did mine in the morning. every morning!

Its not that hard to pass the pullups test for the Calgary police, they dont need to do 9 thats for sure.

Neil

Hi Neil Thanks for the advice il kick hubbies backside to get him to do them Everyday. But I havent found an Argos in Calgary so il have to pop down to our local Canadian Tyre or a Sport Check and get a pull up bar.
Luckily he only has to do a minimum of 5 but he defoe needs to be more confident about them.

Keep us informed on how your getting on with the EPS and good luck

Ali

Sorry I meant Ratty good luck with all the test this week, got distracted with my two monkees running around ,no school today argh!

Neil, how many times have I told you about posting when you are on hallucinogens?

On a more serious note, once you have the bar you need to do more than just chin each day. That will serve you OK to maintain if you can already manage 9-10, but if you can only do say 6 then you need to increase in a measured way.

I chatted to a conditioning specialist called Ross Enamait (look him up in Google - his books are great) and he suggested the following:

Perform your maximum reps to set your base figure (taking 8 as an example). What you do then is "pyramid" your sets to within 1 rep of your maximum with 30-45 seconds rest between sets. For our example that would go something like

1,2,3,4,5,6,7 (total reps 28 or the equivalent of 3 sets of 9). If this is easy, then drop again (i.e.6,5,4,3,2,1). After 1 - 2 weeks try and increase your base level of chins and repeat.

I had a "training max" of 15 - although I managed 12 on the day due to having one disqualified for bent arms. his still gave me plenty in the tank for the rest of the tests and was a comfortable pass beyond the minimum. It also means that your muscle memory improves ( I can still easily crank ten out and I do not even include chins in my regular workouts anymore)

Hope this rather long reply helps - and you can actually understand it!

Thanx Jayzee.I won't even attempt to try and explain all that to hubby il show him later.Im sure it will make sense to him and it sounds like it gets results.

Just wondering are any of you currently or ex UK bobbies? Hubby was in North Yorks Police for 5 years before we decided to head out to Calgary only ending up here cos of thoses damn pull ups in Edmonton. But things have turned out ok here so I believe its all up to fate at the end of the day and having a plan B.

Hi Minihaha, I went through the whole of the Edmonton process the hard way through normal immigration channels. I passed everything, even managing 15 of the dreaded pull ups! Unfortunatly had a hic-up as when they did the background my prof standards sent every complaint I had ever made about me since 1993 whether proved or otherwise ha ha not very sporting I thought! Any how I got defered for 5 years, I was gutted! Still am, although I have put together an appeal, so I have still a glimmer of hope.

So I was looking at your plan B. Hows Calgary's process compare to Edmonton and will your hubby have to do everything again?

Just a thought, although I have to say I think I will just go civilian as I really like Edmonton! haha we'll see. Be there in March for good, Police or no Police!

Yep, still an active officer...although being a CID officer "active" may be a bit of an oxymoron!

Bob, that seems harsh! How far along is your appeal? Any light at the end of the tunnel?

JAYZEE, you cannot call yourself an officer. He is CID, which means see I do nothing!!!!

I on the other hand am a currently serving member of the Metropolitan Police based in Central London on a response team working for a living, and I to have five years experience. It does help as the experience now is recognised with the EPS.

Jayzee, how was work today, do much?

Hi Bobhope. I remember you from some post's a while back, wondered how things turned out.And what a big pain in the arse after all that effort, why could'nt they go on your experience, they should have realised that with all that experience some complaints history comes with the teritory.Hubbies was'nt squeaky clean but was acceptable and realistic for the line of work.

I remember he could use some tests he passed with EPS and submit them to the CPS. Have you had an informal chat with them? We know other bobbies who have not been succesfull with the EPS but like my hubby have flown through with the CPS.
All our research was on Edmonton originally and were about to sign for a rental house in the Riverbend area wich looks lovely when I thought nope lets try Calgary and everything just fitted into place from there. But this was completely mad as we didnt know Calgary at all and just went on gut instinct and an all or nothing attitude.

Strange how things work out but we still have plan C Dand E on the backburner cos you never know really..

Well guys, thats my Edmonton adventure over with.

Things did'nt go quite to plan at the interview stage ...........similar problems to Bob, but they seem to have picked up on it a bit earlier.

Ho Hum.

Annoyed, but not that annoyed to be honest. It's a nice enough place, but I think I'd almost talked myself out of it anyway.

With my length of service, I'd have to freeze my pension and look at giving the EPS a good 20 to 25 years, even with additional contributions.
At the moment I can retire on a full pension at 49 and then go and do something else.

No matter how nice it is over here, (and it is a very pleasant city, even the small bit of it I've seen), do I really want to work until I'm 60 ???

To all those still planning on coming over, best of luck. At least doing this got me back in shape and I got to see a part of the world I probably wouldn't have visited otherwise.

Thanks for all the help and encouragement

All the best

R

Sorry to hear that Ratty. As you said though, I'm sure it has been a worthwhile experience. Stick with the fitness and best of luck to you for the future.

Hi Ratty.
Sorry it was'nt meant to be. You gave it a good go and deserve a pat on the back for trying when most people just sit at home dreaming and not doing anything about it.

All the best to u Ali

Ratty dont be too disheartened, dont forget there is an appeal process and of course there is Calgary, who should be starting a PNP programme soon. There are also loads of jobs available in Edmonton, you could start your own immigration process now so that you would have permanent resident status and then you can live and work anywhere in Canada. Dont live for your pension, live to learn to ski and play hockey! ha ha. I have a 24yr pension when I go which I cant claim till 60! Who cares! Gotta be more to life. Anyway Best of luck. Always have an option. Cheers mate.

Hi guys,

Just for everyone's info I know there have been a few questions on some of the threads on this forum about time it takes for gaining PNP etc. I thought I would post my time line as am 1st through on the PNP for Edmonton.

Got PNP authorisation from Alberta within 4 weeks. We then sent our forms to London on 20th January, received our AOR 8 days later and had our medicals today. London seem to be putting these PNPs through very quickly. The only delay I forsee for anyone applying will be whether there are spaces on Edmonton Police's courses.
